Daily Democrat. A WRECKED LIFE. lit waslving on the damp ground near the Democrat office with his head resting on a sharp edged stick of wood asleep. Be Ing awakened he said he was "full" and wanted to sleep it off. He pleaded that the police should not be notified, and shud dered at the thought of the lockup. There were still remaining evidences of good breeding and bright inte'lec'uility, but r.ow, alas, he was but the sad picture of a wrecked human life. He pleaded that the officer should not be informed as he would disturb no one. He wanted to s'esp off the effects of the flowing bowl to v. : oe seduc tive influence he had yielded. 1.: . .... Be ing warned that if a policeman h. . pass that way he would inevitably be la. .en to the calaboose, this wreck of a former man hood, in the most pitiful manner, asked where he should go. He said he i no money and the cold uncharitable wo. Id was about to refuse him the narrow place be. tween the sidewalk and a pile of wood on which he might forget his wretchness in weary 6eep. He had been well educated. He had followed telegraphing for nearly a score of years, but the tempter came, and In a moment of weakness he yicided and was ruined. He was once a bright, lo .'able boy on whom a devoted mother bestowed her best care and deepest love. ' But now he is even lower than the prodigal con. He has not honest courage enough left to return to his father. He is irrevoc ably fixed in his downward course and will ere long fill a drunkard's grave. Ah what a sad sight to see the human wreck. Young man, it is a lesson for you. He was born as you were born. His parents doted on him just as de votedly as yours da on you. Ho is but an example of what you are almost sure to be come if you yield to theseduc.Ire inflne-ce of the tempter that destroys his ylctlms by the thousands upon thousands yearly. One of the boldest engineering schemes brought forward for a long time is that proposed by Major Powell of damming up some of the canyons of the Rocky Moun tains, and converting them Into immense reservoirs of water, for use in irrigating the plains below, and also serving to regulate the flow of water in the Western tributaries of the Mississippi, These immense ravines, extending far into the heart of the moun tains, with their comparatively narrow mouths, offer extraordinary opportunities for accomplishing such a work at a small expense, although we think the practical value of such a system of reservoirs could onlybe determined by actual trial. A queer little growth makes appearance in the wire grass country of Georgia. It is called by the natives the dollar plant, from the singularity of its leaves, which are per fectly round, lying flat upon the ground, and when full grown the exact size of a dol lar. When the plant is pulled up it is seen that the leaves retain their perfect round ness from their incipiency, and grow through all the gradations the money takes, from the size of the five-cent piece to dlmes, quarters, lialves, and the coin from which it takes its name. When it blossoms it throws out from the center a cluster of yellow flowers. I a Prof. Morse, of Salem, Mass., has de vised a simple siove for warming rooms by means of solar heat. It consists of a shallow box, having a bottom of corrugated iron and a glass top. This device is placed outside the building, so that the sun can shine directly into it. The rays pass through the glass and are absorbed by the metal, heating-it to a high temperature and warming the air of the box. The air, which on sunny days rises to a temperature of 90 K is conveyed into the room which is to be heated. A good bread pudding is made as fol. lows: Crumble stale bread and soak in milk Put a layer of the moistened bread crumbs into a pudding dish and scatter raisins and a little powdered cinnamon over it. To about a quart of the bread crumbs beat up three eggs with two heaping teaspoonfuls of sngar: mix with this a little wine or rum, if desired, and pour over the pudding. Bake about twenty minutes. If an ordinary tall hat gets to look very shabby It may be renovated for a time by damping it well with a sponge dipped in vinegar, then brushing It with a hard brush till dry. Talk about your cigarette smoking! Here's a man over l.i Connecticut, who has just died, that smoked over 2000 herrings a day. It was his busiiiess. A Washington Territory man left $2000 for all the delicacies of the season to be fed to his dog, while his old father was made heir to his watch and chain (inly. You may wish to marry a wife without a failirg, but what if the 'ady, af'er you find her, happens to be in want of a hus band of the same character? Fever patients are often troubled g- fatly by thirst, when water drank in any quanlty would be harmful.
