The post-office clerks have con stantly to refer to person to whom letters, papers, etc., are addressed, and It being al together too tedious to keep writing: "The person to whom the letter is addressed,' The person to whom the paper addressed,'' and so on, they coined the word "addres see." It is such a convenient word that it Is coming into general use, and the dictionary makers will be obliged to recognize It and Inscr. it in future editions of their works. According to the reliable authority the number of newspapers and periodicals now published in the United States is a fraction over sixteen thousand a gain of nearly nine houndred all told. Kansas Cii y, Nov. 9 A Journal special from Pittsburg, Kansas, says: The most dreadful disaster In the history of Kansas occured at 5 o'clock this evening. When tne men were preparing to leave ou their work at shaft No. 2, at Frontenac, a suburb of Pittsburg, a terrible explosion was heard that snook tne earth for a great distance and completely shattered the shaft. On investigation it was found that 16b men were In the mine at the time of the explo sion, being 112 feet below the surface. It is almost certain that all are dead. At this writing the only two exceptions two men who were in the car coming up, and being near the top of the shaft, managed to es cape. 1 Snow Storm, ATciiioOK.Lon., Nov. 9. The most phe nomenal snowstorm that ever occurred In NorLhern Kansas began this morning, and has continued furiously all day. Trains are all delayed, and telegraph wires are pros trated in all directions, with the exception f one line to Kansas City. In Atchison over 200 telephone lines are broken and so tangled up with electric light wires that the electric light works have been suspend ed to prevent accidents. The snowstorm is the heaviest that has occurred atanv season of the year since 1878. The extent of the damage cannot be ascertained, owintr to the suspension of telegraphic communication. West Virginia. Wheeling, W. Va Nov. 9 Forty coun ties show a net republican gain of 4,046. The remaining fourteen counties will at the same ratio, give the republicans a gain of 4845, which would give the state to the repuDiicans ny 024 majority. . California, San Francisco, Nov. 9. Early this afternoon the count in this city was com pleted In 171 precincts out of the total of 176, and the result was as follows: Cleve land 28,566, Harrison 25,652, Curtis 273, Fisk 62, scalteiinS 14. The s'.ate goes for Harrison by about Sooo. A Battle. Cairo, Nov. 9 Seventy thousand fol lowers of the mahdi attacked the town of Wadai, west of Darfoor. The garrison re pulsed the assailants and killed 3ooo,but the mahdi's forces attacked and captured the town. The sultana of Wadai has fled to Chairl. Horrlbi.-. London.N'ov. 9. The murder 6end adds another to his list of victims. At 11 o'clock this morninfl the body of a woman cut In two pieces was discovered In a house on Dorset street Spltsfields.
