Daily Democrats (I Frederick Gebhard has begun suit against the New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company to recover damages for the loss of thoroughbred racing horses, which were killed in the smash-up at Sho hola last summer. The amount of damag. es claimed is $190,003. A very pertinent question was abked the city council by "Citizen" in yesterday's is sue of the "Democrat." What will the city do with the sway backed sewer on Cala. poola sti eet There was gross incompeten cy either in its grading or construction, and great dereliction in he performance of of ficial duty In accepting the work. Shall a tax be levied to put it in order? The practice of filling the house cellar ' with vegetables, fruit, pork barrels and soap casks Is believed by some excellen authorities to be the cause of a large per cent of malarial fevers and other maladies which bring sadness and gloom and death to nearly every rural, neighborhood In the early spring months. ' A slow, old, broken-down horse will con sume about the same amount of food as the strong, fast-walking horce, but will do - not more than one-half the work. A scrub cow which gives small messes of blue milk will cost her owner as much as a first-class cow which will return a good profit every year, It is such stock as this that eat up the profits of the farm and cause many fail ures in farming. Breakfast should not be a heavy meal and moderation should be especially ob' served in regard to partaking of hot food. Liberal use of hot tea and coffee is apt to produce discomfort throughout the day. Ice cold radishes, oatmeal, crackers and milk, a slice of cold lambj cold asparagus and fresh fruit are suggestive of . breakfait arrangements which are luxurious without being expensive, As seventy-five per cent, of superfine flour is starch, only poor health and starved teeth can be the result for those who make this their dependence, as is done by the poor in targe cities. Variety of food is known to be favorable to health, and food supplying starch, sugar and oil are neces sary adjuncts; but in the superfine flour that makes bread and cake so beautiful to the sight and delightful to the taste, lurks the insidious foes of the dental organs. LUKIOLS FACTS. - One pound of seed will yield about 000 asparagus stalks. ' The oldest and largest tree In the world is a chestnut near the foot of Mount Etna, The circumference of the main trunk is 312 feet. An Orlando (Fla.) man has a couple of tame sand-hill cranes which he finds more serviceable than watchdogs in warning him against tramps or burglars. The cranes utter a shrill note at the approach of any stranger. It is estimated that there are 3,ooo,coo men in America who get shaved three times a week. That means an expendi ture of thirty cents a week, or $15.60 a vear for each man, or for the 3,0:3,000, $n,C:a 000 annually. An owl killed Itself and a whole green house full of costly foliage plants one . night by falling into the stovepipe, thus shutting off the draft and causing the es cape in the room of coal gas, which is fatal to vegetation as well as to animal life. Speaking of Alaska In a recent lecture in Washington, Prof. J. W. Chlckerlng said that the great obstacle to enjoying a summer there is the vast number of large and bloodthirsty mosquitoes. Dogs are killed by them, and men preserve their lives only by covering their faces with thick cloths and wearing gloves. Trained fleas are ethlblled from time to time. Whether trained or untrained, they are extremelty Interesting Insects simply from an athletic point of view. A healthy flea will cover 300 times V. own length at one jump. They are plucky fighters, and will stand on their hind legs and strike at one another unill they lose legs, antenuic and life. A single fl-a has been known to draw a silver cannon twenty-four time its own weight, and to show no fear at the discharge of gunpowder from the cannon. Mr. Palmer, a Pittsburg natural gas ex pert, has made the calculation that each day Co3,ooo,cco cubic feet of natural gas are drawn i'rom the bowels of the earth for use In that city. This amount weighs over ii.ooo.oco pound, of which 8,000,000 pounds Is carbon. Mr. Palmer is of the opinion that, with the withdrawal of so much material, something will give way. Already, since the development of natural gas in western Pennsylvania, there have been several "shakes." Iloitsc for Sals. A good, gentle year old horse for sale. Enquire of liROWN'.LL & Stanard.
