A remarkable instance of the Increase of
temperature in the earlh towards the cen
tre has been presented at Pesth, where the
deepest artesian well in the world is that
now being bored for the purpose of supply
in the public baths and other establish
merits with hot water. A depth of 8140
feet has already been reached, and it fur
nishes 176,000 gallons daily at a tempera
ture of 1580 F. The municipality have re
cently voted a large subvention in order
that one borirg may be continued to a
greater depth, not only to obtain a larger
volume of water, but at a temperature of
179 F.
The latest and strangest case of the uses
of applied science recently occurred near
Perijeux, France, where five persons were
Imprisoned by the caving in of a quarry
wall, and there weie no means at hand to
rescue them. To find out where they were,
a shaft twelve inches in diameter was
bored, down which was slid a tube, near
the end of which was a small camera sur
rounded by a battery of electric lights.
With this apparatus a number of negatives
were taken, and the effect of the disaster
shown, even to the faces of the two corpses
It was thus known that the men were dead,
and that effort to succor them would be
useless.
Dr. Ernst Welssenbacher, professor of
geology at Heidelberg University, Ger
many, tells .an alarming tale of impending
disaster to the town of Findlay, Ohio. He
has been making a scientific investigation
of the natural gas wells which underlie
the town, and finds that at a depth of about
1200 feet there is an enormous cavern
filled with highly inflammable gas under
tremendous pressure. Eelow this are sev
eral strata of rocks, perhaps a mile in thick
ness, and beneath the rocks is a fire raging
at a temperature of nearly 35000 F. From
the tremendous crackling, which the
learned professor distinctly heard by the
help of a delecate sound instrument, he
judges that disintegration is going on with
great rapidky, and regards an early catas
trophe as not only possible but probable.
The French are ahead of us in the use of
steam power for locomotion on the high
way. An exchange says that In the south
of France the government postal services
is supplemented by the "wagon post" of
private contractors, who employ many
hundred horses in conveying small parcels
from town totown, even along the railway
lines. This business has become so exten.
sive that several road locomotives have been
ordered for it, ar.d are proving very satis
factory. Two of these machines are run
ning between towns 70 miles apart eacht
making the trip one way nightly ata speed
of eight miles an hour. Paitof the road
very hilly, with long gradients up to a
much as 1 in 1 1. The locomotlve.with coa
and water, weighs 15 tons, ar.d the loaded
wagon from 7 to 10 tons, making the aver
age weight of the train 23 tons. At 175
pounds pressure, the engines give about
twelve-horse power, and with fair roads
use about half a ton of fuel for the round
trip of 140 miles. These engines haye been
running over six months without interruption.

Do you expect your horse to be equally
good at everything. The horse, like the
man, most be adapted to his work.
Near the close of a journey let the horse
walk. If covered with swea. rub off with
a rag, to prevent too sudden cooling.
Collargalls and bruises are benefitted by
washing with salt water. Wash shoulders
daily when using the horse. Bilne is good
for stiff joints.
Experts claim seasickness can be regu
lated by a system of breathing. One must
sit still and breathe regularly and freely
according to a fixed plan: Time your
breathing to the upward and downward
motion of the boat. As the boat falls
there should be a full expiration, and as the
boat begins to rise ' art on an inspiration,
ending just as the boat starts to drop. It it
an easy plan to follow and will make you
laugh at the idea of being sick, unless you
have a stomach so weak as to be affected
by the swaying of an elevated train or boat
on a short and smooth ferry.
