LOCAL RECORD.
Attempt at Banc Robbery. Particulars
were received last evoning of an attempt t
rob the Lebanon bank. Trenches had been
dag under to the vault, where there was a
place large enough for a man to work. The
bottom of the safe was removed and a trap
door pat in its place. Two holos eight inches
square bad been cut through the safe; but
the burglar proof box was too much for the
drill. Fortunately the drill marks were dis
covered and the whole plan laid bare. As
there were $17,000 in the safe it may be see0
how fortunate tfiia was. The indications
were that only professionals could have done
the job. The manner in which the steel Ur

test showed its great efficiency. Ten or
twelve attempts in different places weromade

the railroad, was suspected of having a hand
in the work, and this morning a warrant was

the Depot hotel with Mr Castello, another
railrood man, and arrested him and placed
him in the oounty jail. One or two well
known Lebanon men are suspected of know
ing something about the matter, and it is
possible there will be some interesting de
velopments. The cas", set for a hear
ing before Justice Humphrey as soon as pos
sible after the arrival of the Lebanon train
with witnesses, was proceeding at the time of
going to press. About fifteen Lebanon peo
ple were present, and it seemed probable
that there would be atrong enough evidence
to bold Bannon, among other things his pur
chasing drills and powder of Stewart & Sox
Saturday evening. The preparatory work iu
reachiog the sale mast have taken five or six

The First. A Miss Chambers walked

Thanksgiving. The Democrat la like
a brother newspaper in another part of the
State ; It doesn't know whether it will be
turkey or crow on Thanksgiving day, but
after reading President Cleveland's nicely
gotten up proclamation we are willing for
it to be turkey with some cranberry sauce
and snipe for appetizers.
Aquarium Car. Col J H Wood, who
claims the distinction of having built the
first lath and plastered house at Leadvillr,
is passing over the O. & C. with an aquar
ium car, to see which he chrrges an ad
mission of 25 and 15 cents. He was in Ore
gon City yesterday and is looked for at Al
bany most any time. The car is said to be
full of curiosities.
Married. As announced before hand
bv the Democrat the weddineof Marshal
J. Kinney and Miss Narcissa E White took
place at Hazelton, Kan., on Tuesday, Oct.
30th. They will come to uregon in time
to be here for Christmas, and will make
Astoria their home.

Mr C W Watts informs the Democrat
that he has not rented rooms in the Strahan
block for his job office as stated last evening,
so you see, newspapers, like people, are some
times misinformed.
A new invoice of Premium Savon soap
has just been received t F. L. Kenton's di
rect from the factory in San Francisco. This
is a special brand put up for Mr. Kenton,
and he warrants it to give satisfaction. ,
H A Adams, of Myrtle Creek, an exten
sive prune grower, has dried and packed
ready tor market 20.000 pounds of prunes
from about eight acres of prunes this season.
At 8 cents a pound, which he expects to get,
his prune orchard will yield him $1600, or
$200 per acie. Plaindtaler.
State Senator R. A. Irvine, of Linn ooun
ty, was in town last evening. He has been
visiting his son, Doo Irvine, of Helix, and
left 00 the west bound train for home. He
thinks the Kepablican majority in Oregon
will not be over ball what it was in June.

Julius Gradwohl is now making a special
ty of crockery, fancy goods and silver ware,
of which be carries a large and select stock.

other day and said Harrison would carry

a the democrat who thinks Cleveland will
make a clean sweep with the exception of
Pennsylvania.

Weeps. An Astoria paper objects to the
eulogy on Yaquina Bay from the N. Y.
Sun of a recent day, and says the writer is
a lunatic. It particularly weeps at the part
which says Yaquina Is the finest harbor
north of San Francisco. Of course this
view is principally inspired because As
toria is on the Columbia river, and be
cause, there is some ground for complaint.
The A. & A. R. R. In another column
will be found an advertisment of the As
toria ft South Coast railraod for bids to
clear the right of way. This looks as If the
company meant business, and Intended to
commence work at once. The board of
directors are thorouehlv in earnest and

that the Astoria & South Coast railroad is

Something New. A gentleman has
been exhibiting near Deyoe & Robson's a
yery ingenius harrow. The action of
dragging it makes the whole harrow re
volve, preventing the dirt from becoming
lodged on the teeth, and pulverizing the
earth in a remarkably elI1cle.1t manner.
This is the newest thing under the sun the
Democrat has seen lately.
Co.mino In. Quite a number of men are
coming in from '.he front on the O. P. and
offering their time checU for sale, and, as
well, others are leaving to begin work. As
there will be work for a month or more yet
there should be more going than coming.
There is the usual amount ot kicking pecu
liar to all railroad building.
No Enthusiasm. Never before In the
history of Oregon have public speakers in
a presidential campaign been greeted by
such small house,on both sides. Our citi
zens are not enthused at all, though they
are watching the fight from a distance
with plenty of interest. Only a small au
dience greeted Fred. V. Holman at the
Court House ; but he delivered a live, log.
leal address,and it was most certainly from
democratic standpoint. Hon. W. R.
Bllyeu, who has returned from a trip
through Southern Oregon reports good
houses at nearly every place where he
spoke. At Roseburg the hall was packed,
probably five hundred being present. Even
Dolph and George H Williams have to
tneak to small audiences. The latter was
over at the Bay and is said to have spoken
to almost empty benches. We predict
some life, though, by members of the vic
torious party when tne result Is known.
Several Willing. Several Albany
gentlemen, some of them confirmed old
bachelors, say they are willing to enter in
to such a wager as was made on the Col-
umbia several days ago, that is, marry
some girl on the 4th of March, 1SS9, if
Cleveland is elected or on the 4th of March
1893 if Harrison is elected or vice versa.
All they want is the young lady to make
the wager with. Lebanon has several
young men In the same fix also, among
whom is the editor of the Express, who is
tremblingly waiting for a proposition.
