Daily Democrat. NATION AL;DEHOCRATIC:rnCKET. or Pre)idoot-OSOVBRCliKVBLAND,otNe York for Vl Preii limt-AliLES 3. TUUU1I IX, ol'Ohlo For Presidential Elector. W. R. BILYEU, of Linn county. W. H. E 'TIK'IRll, of Siullnoinh county K. II. SKIPiVOitru, ol Umatilla, oounty. Mr, Fred Holman was advertised to speak In this city next Saturday, but the state central committee has changed It to Friday evening at ?:3o o'clock. Let al' take note of the chance. The tariff taxes flannel shirts 95 per cent. Republ'ctns tell us this is in the In terest of workingmen. Since they have taxed all the woolen mills out of business except those which use more cotton than wool, the blessing to labor in the 95 per cent, tax is decidedly obscure. The September report of the Agricultur al College of Michigan, jnst published, Is devoted largely to the subject of spraying apple trees with London purple orarsenite of line. Given results of elaborate experi ments show that spraying should be done as soon as the blossoms fall from the trees, the first time with a solution of one pound or less to 100 gallons of water; the second if necessary ,of one pound to 150 gallons of water. With cool assumption a Protection organ classes masons, roofers, carpenters, paver6, street-railway employees, etc, as "absolute ly protected occupations" because houses, pavements, etc, cannot be imported, True, but the foreign labor which builds and makes these things can be and is impoited Muscle and skill are on the Protectionists' free list. The non-protected occupations are taxed 47 per cent, upon imported neces. sities and subjected to unrestricted competi tion with foreigh labor in their own field. Since Secretary Fairchild issued his cir cular of April 17th the Treasury Depart ment has purchased Government bonds ag gregating $87,454,050 which have cost the Department $104,906,644 or about seven teen and a half million dollars more than face value. The surplus is now said to be a fraction less than seventy-two millions, but this does not Include twenty-two mil lions in sllvei coin on hand, which keeps it close to the hundred million point. Republican papers In various parts of the country have had a good deal to say about the defection of Ex-Gov. Downey, o' California, who some time ago came out for Harrison and against Cleveland. It now appears that the ex-governor had "grabbed" a large tract of land in Oregon, and that President Cleveland's administra tion wrenched It away from him and re stored it to the public domain, as It has re stored millions of acres. Mr. Cleveland is not the kind of a president the land grab bers like. One of the humors of the campaign is the Oregmia criticising, Thurman for not tel ling the truth, as that paper falsely alleges, This Is diabolism Incarnate. Only last August that paper said that Thurman mad e a speech In which he said free, (Chinese,) Immigration to this country would be ad advantageous as furnishing cheap labor to this country, This was a bold, heartless, willful lie, and that paper is now wrathy because It was caught In the lie, and has the Indescribable meanness to attempt to shift its own shame to the head of its vlc tim. Commenting upon the world's remak that candidate Harrison is worried over the ques- tion,"Is Blaine my Burchard?" the Boston Post remarks that Harrison Is fully compe tent to be his own Burchard. 1-UBL1C SPEAKING. Brass Company is one of the concerns that are making use of the notorious pay envelopes of the re publican national committee. At a meet ing in Bridgeport the other night Congress man UcMillin branded this method of In timidation. He held up an envelope on which the week's wages of the "protected" laborer named on It were $4.46. The next morning the man was discharged. But the republican managers insist that they do not mean to intimidate workingmen by this process. Such an exhibition of brazen cheek leads naturally to the suspicion that all the brass used by this company is not put In the articles manufactured by it. A Pittsburg Infant which employs lo,- 000 men has raised a row by asking a day's wages as a gift to the republican national committee. The republican workmen are indignant and the democrats are in still worse humor. The idea of Henry Clay was to nourish Infant Industries until they could walk alone. To do this he suggested a pro tective tariff. Do not the American farm ers consider this Pittsburg Infant with ten thousand workmen a lively baby ? The pro prietor gave $15,000 to the committee. Would not Henry Clay have asked that proprietor to use the sum as pap for the in fant f The proprietor desired $ 10,000 more or a day's pay. As he had 10,000 men his wages seem to average $1 a day. The total vote, registered, in New York City this year Is 2Se,ooo. Four years ago t was 340,000, a gain of 4 ,000. Four ye-rs ago 95 per cent, of the registered vote was cast. At least the same propor tion will be cast this year which would bring the vote up to 372,000. Supposing that each party should hold its relative vote of four years ago, and should take relative ly of this new vote of 46,000 then the vote of the two parties in that city would be as tollows: Cleveland 163,000, Harrison 103, 000, scattering 6000, giving Cleveland 60, 000 majority in the city. The four coun ties of Kings, Queens, Suffolk and Rich mond will increase this to 82,000. The highest majority claimed by republicans in the remainder of the state is 70,000. So that It seems Impossible for republicans to carry that state. Estray Notice.
