A gentleman who re cently returned from Oregon to Minnesota told the people thcrelhat it was all malaria out here and everybody was sick. Such a man ou'.'ht to be obliged to spend his life among the cyclones and freezups of Minnesota. We have had sickness hero and some malaiia, which is found every where ; but there Is no comparison be tween the Eastern typhoid fever and ours The amount of sickness here the year round is as small as in most any place that can be named. There are too many narrow minded men come out here, look up at the sky, turn around, go back, and then begin slandering us. ut loose wno remain ncre a year there are very tew who are not dC' lighted with our climate. Crook Countv. Mr and Mrs S M W ilindman, of Lebanon, are In town.... Those who have recently crossed the Cas cades are "awfully" muddy. ...It is repoit ed that a number of sheep were poisoned in the vicinity of Snow mountain recently hey were supposed to have been poison ed by parties who were averse to sheep coming onto the range in that locality The ranchmen of Heaver are becomins concerned about the failure of the range in that section, and several of them talk of moving to other localities next year. This week licorge Noble and J W Stewart left for Washington Territory to look for ranches.... It is learned at Mitchell that Mose Heart, an old resident of Mountain creek, killed one man and shot another out n Malheur county last week. The trouble ;rewoutola dispute over sheep range, dr Heart was discharged by the committing magistrate who held the preliminary ex Sand BAi;m (?) Capt. There is this about such cases, though, if a man gets intoxicated and does lose his money and gold watch no one believes his story atterwarus. nir u unen, we unuer stand is a hotel man at Eugene, and a rela tiveoftlie present Sheriff there. A Romance. Last year when the tal ented lecturess, Allss rsarcissa while was through Oregon she met, and became ac quainted with, Dr. Aug, Kinney ,of Astoria, one of the most prominent temperance workers in Oregon. It seems to have been a case of love at first sight. Afttr Miss White left a correspondence followed: which ripened Into an engagement, and the affair Is to be consummated with a wed- Hne on Thursday at Miss While's pres ent home in Nebraska, to which invitations have been received in Albany. Miss White is a jewel of a woman and Dir. Kinney is to oe congratulated on tils good tortune. By Rustling. "Bro. Snyder, of the Astoria Transcript, passed through Salem to-day on his way to Dallas to visit his family, and was asked by the Journal man what he thought of the railroad proposl tion. He is sure it will be built and say Salem can secure It, he thinks, by 'rustl Ing.' The road is going to open up some fine country and will be a grand thing for the coast and the valley. journal, w nen it comes to the rub Albany is likewise gO' ing to do some rustling. A good natured game of railroad getting will be the result and there is nothing like competition. The Reason. A Columbia river Ex says: "Wheat is worth four cents more per buohel at Albany than at Salem, aim- ply because Salem has to ship through Portland, while Albany ships via. Yaquina, Wheat is worth more at Walla Walla and on the sound than at Portland. That is the reason why Portland Is losing the ship ping business of the Columbia river." Such items as the above appear in our exchanges constantly to remind us what a valuable Institution the O. P. Is to this part of the vaucy. Argued.
