Daily Democrat. XATIOVYLJPKHrtrRATIC.rriCKEr,: or P.-iJ it-a vVEacLEVUVND,)l Sj JYork For Vim P.-h:.I,i-VV-E a. TJl'iUAS, ol Ohio For Preii lrttial Elector-fur. K. BILVEU, of Linncoantjr. W. H. K-'FIS ISrl, of Multionih county E. K. SaIPA'J tr.I, ol L'jll'.ilu, county. Iresident Cleveland signed the Scott Chinese Exclusion bill. Benjamin Harrison voted fourteen times in favor of Chinese iminjration. Take vour choice. Xo evidence could be furnished that the people are exorbitantly taxed. The extent of thesupeifluous burden will be better ap preciated when it is suggested that such surplus alone represents taxation aggregat ing more than one hundred and eight thousand dollars in a county containing fifty thousand inhabitants. The Atlanta Constitution says: "If the farmers of the whole South are as much in earnest in their efforts to destroy the Jute Bagging Trust as the farmers of Geor gia, there will be no trouble about the mat ter whatever. The Georgia planters are in earnest, and the probability is that the trusts will not have much of an effect on them. By antagonizing the trust in every possible way the farmers will not only save money, but will aid in the development of new enterprises for the manufacture of bagging. There will be no lack of capital to invest in these enterprises, and the onlv wonder is that the South, with its wonder ful resources, has not long ago prepared itself to furnish the wrapping for its great crop, instead of buving it abroad." Strangely enough, the men who contend that we ought to consume all we produce and neither buy nor sell to other nations, are clamorous for an American merchant marine. For what? To be common carries for the free traders of the world? If we are to hare no foreign trade it is like owning an iron safe with nothing to put in it. A dispatch to the Eztimiuer says that Hover, republican candidate for governor of Indiana, spoke at Lapoite in that state on the 9th inn and that the Chinese Laun dry in the city was profusely decorated in honor of the occasion. The affair created much unfavorable comment. The other day a city election was held in Newark N. T. The democrats have not car ried this city in the presidential year for the last twenty years. This time they car ry It by 525 majority, a net gain of of 2,029 over the vote of 14. Blaine having carried it by 1500 majority. It U the strongest pro tection citv in the state, A republican friend says he sa .v a re port of a speech made by congressman Horr of Michigan in which the impression was made that there is no duty on the ma terial out of whichour tir.-ware,such as pans. pails, cans, etc. are made and writes to say that the Democrat has more than once made a different statement and asks us to correct our statement We would cheerfully cor rect our statement about the matter if it 'were not true, but heing true.(as we spoke by the record.) we reiterate that practically and substantially our statement is true. We will explain: On tin ore there is no duty, but tin ore is n"t imported The ore is manufactured in foreign countries into tin plates or terne plates and then imported here and pays a duty of one cent per pound which amounts to an advalorem duty of 35 to 40 per cent Tin plate is not made in this country, hence this tax is without ex cuse or reason. This friend would have us state the effec'. of putting hides on the free list, It was in 1S7J that hides were put on the free list. At that time our exports amounted to the sum of $573,331. L'nder the stumulation of unrestricted trade in hides our export of leathers and manufact ures of leather amounted to $10436,138 m 1SS7. Our friend will readily comprehend the beneficial effects of putting hides on the free list and the credit is due to his party. 'The protection that merely protects the goods," says the Philadelphia Record (Ind.), "without protecting the labor that make the goods, helps the capitalist who makes goods to sell, and injures the man who has labor to sell. Competing foreign goods are kept out of the market, and com peting labor is invited into the market. The laborer is thereby doubly defrauded first, by a wage rate forced down by im ported competition, and, secondly, bv the increased cost of goods advanced in price by taxation. The game of protection is game in which Labor ploughs the field and plants the corn, while Monopoly gathers the harvest." Joint Discussion. E. R. Skipworth and R. McLean will meet in joint discussion at the following times and place3 : Roseburg, Saturday, Oct, 13, 7:30 p. m Oakland, Monday Oct. 15, " Drain, Tuesday, October 16, ' ' Eugene, Wednesday, Oct. 17, u Brownsville.Thursdav. It is amusing to see the result when on e of the stories about '-wholesale changes" to the republicans cn the tariff issue is run down. The Burlington (Iowa) lazikeye recently set one afloat, to the following ef fect: -Four years ago the three mills at Jamestown, N. Y., owned and operated br William Broadhead & Sons, of Jamestown, and employi ng over 1S00 men, cast a solid vote for Cleveland and Hendricks. This year the entire force, employer and em ployees, will support Harrison and Mor ton. The change is made solely upon the tariff issue, and was first inaugurated bv the men employed in the factories. Wil liam Broadhead Si Sons, although lifelong democrats, have interests which they can not barter for Cleveland's free trade pol icy." The truth about the matter is thus given by thewchairinan of the Cleveland and Thurman Club in Jamestown: -The systematic circulation of similar stories re garding the Broadhead mills has brought letters of inquiry from other parts of the est, which convinces us that a monu mental liar, with a disposition to outdo all rivals in the business of campaign false hood. Is covering considerable territory in the Wester.i states. Instead of three, Wil Ham Broadhead & Sons owns one worsted factory in Jamestown. Instead of 1S00 men, the canvass of their mill last week shows just 132 men of twenty-one years of age, ard probably not all of them voters and only 66, including men and boys, could be got together for the republican parade last Tuesday. There are no more republi can voters than there were in "84, and neither were Mr. Broadhead or his sons ever democrats, but on the contrary have always been extreme republicans." Carpets.
