The democratic national committee sends outa public appeal through the press to the peo ple, reminding them that the battle against monopoly is their battle, and calling on the rank and file the workers of all classes to send in their dollars and half dollar6 for use as legitimate campaign expenses- The republican managers, through I'resi dent Foster, of the National League of Republican Clubs and the national repub lican committtee, sent out circulars marked "confidential" to the protected beneficiaries pointing out that their monopoly is in danger and also calling attention to the fact that in the words of the Foster "fat" circular, "the manufacturers receive the sole, or at least the most direct and im portant, benefits from the tariff." In viev of these "sole benefits" the protected man ufacturers arc urged to "put money in their pockets by contributing their hundreds and thousands and tens of thousands of dollars for the purpose of aiding in the maintainance of their highly profitable tar iff-taxing privilege. The democracy , in a word, publicly appeals to the millions fo' contributions in the interest of the millions.' -while the republican managers appeal priv atelv to millionaires for money to be spent in advancing the special interests of mil lionaires. These two facts speak for them elves;they need no comment. Herman Radclyffe, secretary of the Boston Home Market club, is gibetted by the New York Nation for flooding the country with forged quotations from Eng lish papers on the subject of "free trade ' In America. But Radclyffe keeps right on circulating his forged extracts and lies and the the republican papers copy and youch for them, And the republican cam paign committees, from national down, are circulating the forged quotations, knowing them to be forged. Henry R. Hinckley, a prominent cutlery manufacturer of Northampton, Mass., and an old republican, being reported as mak ing a caustic reply to the fat-frying circu lar of Mr. Foster, was requested by E. B. Whitney to furnish a copy of the letter. He writes in reply to Mr. Whitney's letter as follotvs: Office of Northampton" Cutlery O., Northampton", Mass., Sept. 13. Dear Mr. Whitney: I did write a letter t Mr. Daggett in answer to the circular, but I did not keep a copy. I wrote him that I agree with him that the tariff was the issue of this campaign, but that I thought the republican party was on the wrong side, and that I would not give a cent to save it from perdition, Every man ufacturer is not a sneak thief. The republican candidate for vice presi dent devotes his letter of acceptance to a straight-out, unreserved, thick and thin en dorsement of the republican national pfat- form free tobacco, free whiskey, free ole omaigarine, repeal of the bank taxes and all. Among other things that platform de clares that the tariff should be "so adjust ed as to check the importation of articles the like of which can be produced in this country" a clean declaration in favor of such increased duties as will shut out cloth ing, cloth, sugar, raisins , salt in fact every thing that can be produced here, no mat. ter whether to advantage or not.' Is Mr Morton's letter Intended as notice to the republican senate to stop its heretical talk about tariff reduction and adjourn? Mr. Blaine seems detrmined to outdo his blunders about the trusts and the "political revolution" in Maine. He has rashly taken np the pension record of the Administra tion, obliyious of the familiar adage about the fate of the man who "monkeyed with the buzz-saw." If the "uncrowned king' does not desire to pose as the champion o the pension agent sharks he wi'l do well to change his subject without delay. It would be a terrible catastrophe for the supporters of Gen. Harrison if-the senate should really pass a tariff bill wiping out the surplus and th'is wipe out all of the re publican candidate's schemes to dispose of the surplus. But Gen. Harrison propably knows that he can depend on the senate not to do this. The Mills bill, which Mr. Blaine savs seeks to "destroy the tariff of iS6t," is 1 percent, higher in the average than that tariff was, provides for higher duties in every schedule and covers more articles.
