In Ll.in coun- tv. for instance, nronertv Is asncLsed at ..v 60 per cent, of its value. Thie year the f,rors value of property is placed at $7,652,. 920, which, we will say, is 60 per cent, of the value. The indebtedne-o is $1.6.0.027 Ins'.cad of only deducting; 60 per cent, 'he indebtedness the whole amount is de dueled, that is if a man is worth $ 10,0c 3 he is assessed at isosr j. He owes ViCOO and pays taxes on $1000. If to per cent.of the lrueDiSdness were aLo deducted he would i paytaxe3on $3000, the same as the man who is worth 3jc:x and owes nothing would. In Linn county a difference of -.,1 '656,809.80 is thus made in the amount of jj. taxable properly to the detriment of the man who owes noimn. is it rigntr Strawberries. Warner, re. siding across the river, to bring In a full bo:t o! th's luscious fru'L The Democrat I-, under many obligations for the compli ment. The berries are healthy, plump ones, and are a remarkable sight for the 9th day of October. We have always placed great value on the lln.t strawberries of the season; but as a curiosity October straw berries take the short rake. This has been a remarkable year in everything; but to an eastern man nothing can be more astonish ing than lo see a box of strawberiies raised in the open air in October. A Suicidal Cdjnty. Marion seems to becoming to be the suicidal county of the state. Yesterday John Ilcinz, a farmer, shot himself with a revolver. This makes three cuscs within three weeks In that county, and, '.his after a magnificent har vest. Here everybody wants to live. Several Changes. G. W. Willis, of Lebanon, was in the city yesterday. AVw'-if. Those School Teachers. Rev. An Keny, who had charge of the school teachers, whom the Albany people feu.;ted so gloriously, has written to a Salem pape and among other things says: "Af ei leaving Livingstone, Montana, the parly in my car organized for a reunion in the win lerto perpetuate the pleasant acquaintance made, li-.ey were so e:tremely good na turcd and such a delitrhtfut partv to man age (I took thein tlvough Yellowstone Park, and ran a special car all the way from San Francisco to Boston), that I named them the 'Pacific Pilgrims,' as indi cating their spirit not less than their route. I enclo.e a card giving the list of the members." Boomers. The following from an B.:. may be sung of booming towns generally: 'How dear to my hci.rtisthe boom we are having ; dear is the boomers who help it along. We sing of improvements, of ruet ling and paving, while hundreds of voices join in the song. The kickers must van ish ; the loafers must perish ; the cranks and croakers must all amble down ; and we will encourage, and fondle and cherish those long-headed boomers, those progies sive boomers, those free-handed boomers who brace up the town. The Only Two. The only stallions entered in any of the Northwest races this year have been Oneco and Dick Flaherty, of this county. This is a significant fact which raise: of good animals should cogi tate over. Both made excellent records for themselves. The Word Hash. In the Chinese lan guage the woid hash is the longest and most difficult word to pronounce. The only difficulty about our English hash is to un derstand its composition. It is long only in the list of things that m..v go to make it. McCust's Condition. Every report that comes from Yamhill county is to &ie I effect that old man McCune, one of the vic j tims of the unfortunate Bewley-McCune a 11 ray, is still lying at tne point 01 aeain.
