Miss M'nnie McFarland commences school here to day. We bespeak for her a large and prosperous school. Some things that are not right: A man to hire a horse to drive ten or twelve miles and then drive him thirty-five or fortv mile in one afternoon. Sept 30 A fatal acci dent occured on Los Angles river just above East Los Angles this morning. A young Italian, Antonio Palmeri, and four or fi -e f rinds, started out to huns. Palmeri shot ht a ground-squirrel, and when the little animal dodged into a whole the hunt er thought he could dig It out with the but end of his gun. He held the muzzle toward him, and before his friends could interfere the gun exploded.and he fell to the ground shot through the leg. The failure of the harvest in Germany is attracting serious attention. There is a poor cron of cereals and potatoes The price of bread is rapid ly rising. Since 1S87 rye has advanced 48 ma-ks and wheat 34 marks. In some dis tricts bakers have raised the price of bread 10 prennings per pound. Herr Richter In an article in the Liberal Zcilung calculates that Germany will re quire 13,000,000 hectolitres of grain to meet the deficiency. The people, he says, must therefore demand an immediate diminution of the duty on cereal imports. The pro gressists intend to actively agitate the question.
