A dispatch to the Philadelphia Timet
from Indianapolis says:
"Some three weeks ago the Democratic
old soldiert of this city began the organiza
tion ot a Cleveland ana lliurman Kcgi
mcnt, and 819 names have been placed up
on the roll,the first meeting of the full club
being held to-night. Among them were
fifty. four members of Harrison's regiment,
and of these thirteen belonged to the com
pany which Harrison organi.ed. The club
wi'l appear in uniform in the demonstra
tion Saturday night.
The Thirteenth Indiana Regiment held
its annual reunion here to-day. At the
close of the meeting a motion was made to
visit Harrison in a body, but the chairman
refused to entertain it and adjournd the
meeting.sayine that it was not proposed -'to
turn the reunion into a political body."
Thirteen of the ex-soldiers then went up to
call upon Harrison and the remaining
thirty four called on Chairman Jewett, at
tne iemocratic Headquarters."
Protectionists tell us that competition in
this country is steadily forcing down prices
and that we can now buy goods as cheapily
here as in England. If this be true, they
fail, and always fail, to te!l us why wc need
protection." If competition cheapens pro
ducts,must it not also cheapen labor? How
can cheap goods be made with dear labor?
Tariff reformers say the greater efficiency
of our worl-ingmen more than compensates
for the difference in wages between this
country and England, but thU is denied by
the Blaine party. It is therefore remitted
to the above problem, and if labor be cheap
ened,how does protection protect the wage
earner? The g. o. p. has a good many
conundrums on its hands.

CmCAGO.Sept. 27. The Daily JVewt will
say of the remarkable advance in Septem
ber wheat to-day: "It is the outcome of a
corner in that option by B. II. Hutchinson,

wheat offered lately. As only three days

and began to bid against each other, with

They flocked to his office, where he dispos
ed of 325 000 bushels at $1.25, in a very
short time. He then, after telling those
of the shorts still wanting wheat that it
would go to $2 within a week, went away to
his club, leaving instructions with his brok
ers to sell shorts all the wheat they wanted
at $1. 25, or buy all they would . sell at
$1.25, or buy all they would sell at $1.2.
There is a suspicion that Hutchinson also
has most of the December wheat, and in
consequence, that option went up to $1.
The price reached $1.30 for September
before sidewalk trading ceased, and one
deal is reported at $1.31.

committee. He is one of the most promin
ent men in the territory, and is a son of
Elihu Haines, a noted Illinois politician.

received by Hon. A. G. Thurman from M.
D. Smith, of Farwell, In which the writer
charges on statements made by returning
veterans that Air. Tim, man's house was
not decorated with the stars and stripes
during the G. A. R. reunion. Mr. Smith
asks for the facta in the case The reply

statement is branded as absolutely false.
The Miner?.
Ellexsiiiri;, W. T, Sept. 27. The
Northern Pacilic Coal Company entered
into a compromise to day with the Koslyn
miners and the latter will resume work
Monday morning at the old prices. The
company takes exclusive control of Its own
property without the interference hereafter
of any committees. Four hundred miners
are in Roslyn now and others will be put
to work.
Manager Buckley of the Northern Paci
fic purchased a corner lot this afternoon in
this city and is arranging to put up five
brick stores. The demand for building is
far greater than the supply.
