LOCAL RECORD. Girl Wa.ntei. To do general house work. Inquire of C. J. Dillion, opposite J. G. Cherry's foundry, or at Democrat of fice. Makkiku. At the residence of R. A' Bamford, at Oakville, Mr. A. L. Hart, of Kansas, and Miss Edna llamford, of Linn County, by Rev. A. M. Acheson. Which. A Polls county man says lie had rather live here live years than any where cast of the mountain! ten years. The pessimist would say he had rather live here ten years than live there. He couldn't stand ten there. Enormous. A 30 mill tax has just been levied at Jacksonville to pay the city6 taxes and perhaps build a street car line to the railroad. With other taxes it will make a tax of over 5 cents for Jacksonville peo ple to pay this year. Nv'n.i. Pass. John C. L'ndcrwood, of Kentucky, Grand Sire of the ooverein Grand Ledge of the I. O. O. 1". accom panied hy a large number of the officers and members of the Sovereign Grand Lodge will pass north on the through morning train to-morrow morning on their return to their respective homes East from Los Angeles where the annual session of that body has just closed. A Cckiosity. "Robt. Davidson, famil" iarly known as "Old Uob," took in the cof fee club excursion to Yaquina bay last Wednesday. Dob is 76 years old and at though he has been nearly around the world, last week was the first time he ever rode on the cars, lie was a sailor for many years but lately has been dealing in fish and 'nigger minstrels. He is as hale and hearty as many men half his years." Times. As OrkooN' Hoy, Attorney Cecil R. Holcomb returned on Saturday from a six weeks' visit to the East, during which time he ylsited New York and Chicago, Mr Holcomb Is an Oregon raised boy, had never been East before, and therefore saw much that was interesting while away. Politics, he says, are booming throughout the East and Mrllolcomb.who is an ardent Democrat, is confident that Cleveland will be elected. In New York City the betting is $100 on Cleveland, and $75011 Harrison. News. Waiiuoser's Quarry. The rock quarry owned by Hon. Geo. Waggoner and others, near the city of Corvallis, appears more valu able as it is prospected says the Yaquiua Pott. The recent discovery rf a quartz vein running through the rock, which was speck led with a substance which looked like gold to the inexperieuced eye, induced Mr Ike Hume, one of the owners, to send some of the quarts to a prominent and accredited ac sayor cf San Frnciico for assay. The return was rceuived a few days ago, and certified that the quartz assayed a total of 7-ti 87 per ton, without a trace of lead in it. Bouus. The following from the Prine vlllc A'eiiv shows how BoggB has been con ducting himself since his release from the penitentiary, a place he is liable to be re called to at nny time: '"Boggs, an ex-penitentiary convict, who tramped his way re cently from Eugene to Prineville, bilking his meals from settlers along the route, (something of which was mentioned at the time in this paser byja correspondent,) has been heard from again. It appears that he went from here to Antelope where he engaged a horse from a Mr. Keton for a 'few hours only,1 since which time neither ne nor tne horse have been seen In those parts. This occurred on the 16th Inst. last Sunday. Boggs is a stout built, dark, san dy complexioncd man, about 35 years old." G-O To-morrow night is the time when Robert Nourse will deliver his popular lecture on "John and Jonathan" in this city. The attendance promises to be good, Among the number who will attend will be thirty or forty College students. Our citi zens generally who wish to secure first, class lecturers for Albany will turn out.anu the Opera House should be well filled. The lecture itself Is a treat. Mr. Nourse is said to have no superior in the United States as an orator. The OrrgoniaH, and the press wherever he has been, cannot use too strong language In his praise. A refined lecture by a re.il, live orator is worth more to Albany than a dozen operas or negro hows, and it should be as well patronized. Reserved seats for Nourse can be secured nt Blackman'satthe regular prlce,5o cents, and tickets are on sale at most of the stores. Thk Usual Result. Farmers around Portland who bought goods recently giving their notes payable In five years are now having some fun judging from the follow ing from the Telegram : "A gentleman named Menzic, who lives out on the base line road about tldrty miles from here, was in town yesterday, and he said the notes that were given six month ago hy a large number of farmers around Pleasant Home are now becoming due. These notes were given to some wandering persons who went all through that section selling goods In $15" packages. In most every case those making the purchase were made to understand thatthe notes were to run for live years and that all that would be re quired would be to keep the Interest paid up, but it seems that some deception was used, and they were made payable in six months. Notices are being sent out to the parties against whom the notes were drawn, and they will have to be paid. These notes amount in aggregate to $18,000, and arc held against parties who can ill afford to pay them, and some will have to borrow money to pay them. While very small sympathy should he wasted on tlio-c who are imprudent enough to be thus taken in, there are over two cases that are pitiable." Linn county farmers are repeatedly warn ed against trusting these wandering ras cals. A Rich Strike. Benton county is working upa little mining excitement of its own, that promises to developc into a conflagration. To-day Conductor Ken nedy and Dr. Davis, of Yaquina City, showed a Democrat man the finest speci men of ore yet seen here. It was taken from George Waggoner's quarry at the foot of Mary's Peak, and is full of beads of gold. Dr. Davis showed us an assay made by the Selby Smelting Company, of San Francisco, on some rock sent them. The record was $724.97 in gold, 1.29 in silver and no lead, a remarkably large assav for rock not selected for the purpose. A ton of the rock is being gotten out and will be shipped to a smelter. The owners of the claim, now in the hands of a stock com pany, arc confident it is the richest tiling out and that there are rich deposits in the vicinity. The Waggoner quarry is about twenty miies from Corvallis at the very foot of Mary's Peak, being more accessible than most mining regions. A rush for the region is anticipated. Wool. Some wagons from Silver Lane came in last Friday with 5000 pounds of wool which was purchased by Air. J. D. Matlock for 14c per pound. The trade from that portion of the country could be largely increased by the construction of good roads across the mountains. The parties take home with them their winter su ppl ies. Register. Three Rihs Broken-. Dr.S. R. Jessup of Salem, came up last evening in answer to a telegram, to consult with Dr. Wood ward in Dr. McAlister's crtsc. lie corrob orates the statement of Dr. Woodward that three ribs were broken, at the time the Dr. was thrown from his buggy into the sewer on Ellsworth Street. The fracture is still disunited. Lecture. The lecture at the opera house last evening by Rev. Robt. Nourse on John and Jonathan was most entertain ing and instructive. Dr. Nourse is full of wit and humor, an eloquent orator, a splendid impersonator, and has his address completely on the end of his tongue, so that the interest never Hags from the be ginning to the close. StifsmaH. A Speculation. A regular trotting circuit is being talked of for the North west, and may he In running order next year. In case it becomes a fact Linn coun ty horsemen propose to have this city one of the points in the circuit, and probably hold a county fair in connection with it ft would bring thousands of dollars into Al bany. Sickness. Considerable sickness pre vail through the county .caused by the ex tended dry weather and phrsician6 are kept traveling, one Albany physician yesterday going over one hundred miles by horse conveyance. A weeks rain would be a God-send. Hotel Arrivals Revere House.
