If you're fit or your'e lean, if youi'o pleasant or msan, junt give V. & T. a show to sail you right low, you will feci such a thrill of con tentment until you'll wish you were fat to enjoy more of that For the feeling's immense and you'll show your good sr nso by buying groceries, pro visions and crockery of W & T on Tuesday niyht. lie left the bedside of is dying wife (because, being poor, he had no choice,) to play the principal part in a bit of buffoonery of which he was cast as first buffoon. For two mortal hours he faced a roaring crowd, stimulating their laughter while his own heart-strings tugged and bled. He finished at length and hur ried home, but not until his wife had died so there was a cold welcome for him there. People must be amused in these exacting days, though sometimes at what a cost. Wallace & Thompson's Fat Man. Flinn Block, Albany, Or. J. GRADWOHL, Crockery, fa Ware and Hardware OIL AND LEAD. Agricultural Implements Agent lor Fire nwl Marine Insurance What the people of thii country want is the repeal of needless taxes, the abolition of a surplus revenue, which exists only for the benefit of lobbyists and jobbers in and out of congress. They want to break down that Chinese wall of extreme protection built up by the greed and selfishness of f few favored and cuddled manufacturing in tercsta, which, in the couise of years, have come to the preposterous be'ief that the country mainly exists to be taxed and bur dened for their benefit. Tne total labor cost in a ton of American steel rails is about $5.50. The tariff bonus is $17. But the manufacturers claim that any reduction of that bonus must be taken from the wages of the laborer rather than from the profits of capital. The next step will be to claim the tariff bonus as a vested right. J. Adam Bede of Uuluth Minn, who has heretofore been a very ardent republi can expresses himself this way: "We have a large number of workingmen in St Louis county who believe that an untaxed long-tailed flannel shirt is better than drink of free whisky." The whole wheat crop of Minnesota and Dakota, now harvested, appears to fall at least 35,000,000 bushels below the yield of last year, and not less than 25,000,000 bush' els below the yield of the preceding year Massachusetts Republicans are grumb ling because Governor Ames is not inclin ed to open his barrel this year. 1 hey say- that if Oliver wants 1 for it. 'more" he must pay Goud Mr. Blaine is home again. That can be proved with small endeavor Yet, in his facts and figures he Is just as much "abiOd" as ever. "The good die young." This is especially true of chickens. (loos to Washington. Cmc Aoo.Sept. 24. Five hundred friend f Melville W. Commenting on the wheat outlook, a local paper holds that the rise in the price of cash wheat In this city to $1 per bushel is nn event of national im portance, and is particularly a matter in which the Northwest may congratulate itself. The price is a sort of dead-line in the market, as it has been declared over and over again by men in Chicago whose opinions command respect that the day of dollar wheat is prssed forever. Neverthe less, that price was made Saturday for cash stuff. It is five years since wheat sold at $1 a bushel, and meanwhile it lias been down to about 66 cents, nlthough it has sold as high as $2.75 within the business life of several men now in active busines0. Last year at this time No. 2 spring sold in Chi cago at about 70 cents, the range for the month of September being 67 -J4 to 71? cents, and the average 67 4 cents. Call the average 30 cents, aud tiie increase in the value of the w heat crop of the country is over $125, -xxooo an enormous addition to the wealth of the L'nited States. Heath Krom Snilliox. McMinxxille, Or., Sept. 24. Andy Ennis died of smallpox ot the pest house last night, as predicted. This leaves bu' two cases two children. It the person8 who have been exposed do not take ihe disease soon, the quarantine will be raised. The county fair has been indefinitely postponed.
