That paper knows the statement to be fulse. It ay at the presidential 'election in 1SS4 the republican plurality was 43,000. This statement it knows to be false, but as that paper has lost nil regard j (or "integrity of statement," people have 'come to look upon its campaign inUreprc- ntations as a matter of co-irse. The Herald- Disseminator says : "The burden of democratic argument is to the effect that taxation should be remov ed, yet u hen the republican platform says that if it becomes necessary the only direct tax that is levied by the government should be removed, they "rais the horror stricken cry of free whisky and free tobacco. They recognize no idea of tax excepting the fal lacious one that tariff is tax, and yet they accuse republicans of wanting to remove the lax from whisky and tobacco when not the s iL'hicst intimation has ever been made by republicans towards removing the tariff from those articles," The Herald editor is badly befogged That the republican party wants to repeal the direct tax in ordei to reduce the sur plus is just vhat the democrats charge. Now, what is the direct tax now levied by the government ? It is the internal revenue " tax, that is the tax upon whisky, tobacco and oleomargarine, t his tax the llerahl says wi 1 bi removed if necessary. The democrats sav this is the tax republicans will remove before they would remove any fart of the protective tariff duties. This is what the republican p'atform proposes to do. Then how in the name of all that is reasonable can the Herald say that not the slightest intimation has ever been made b republicans towards removing the tax from these articles, meanirg whisky and tobacco. No, Mr. Herald, when you say that vour platform provides that if it be comes necessary the only direct tax that is levied by the government should be moved, you give your whole case away, for the direct tax is the internal revenue tax upon whisky, tobacco and oleomargarine. The customs duties tax, as every ten year old school boy knows is cn indirect tax Your p'.alform pledges you to repeal alt the tax on whisky, tobacco and oleomar garine before you would surrender ayfart of the protective system. It is useless for any one to deny the free whisky plank in the republican platform. It Is there, and the men who made that platform meant that it should be there. If they diJ not represent the honest and virtuous republi can masses then let them and their works be repudiated. They put in the free whis ky plank because they believed in it,and it will be found that they will say as much before the campaign is ver. Whatever else Major McKinley and his crowd may be, they are not hypocrites. Their plank Is as follows : "If there shall remain a larger revenue than is requisite for the wants of the Gov ernment, we favor the entire repeal of in ternal taxes rather than the surrender of any part of our protective system." That is the free whisky plank. If taxes must be reduced they shall come off whisky and tobacco, and not off lumber, clothing, salt, iron an J steel, and the other necessaries. Free whisky means whisky at 3 cents a drink, or two for a nickel. Is the country readv for it ? September the 20th, 1884, the Oregoniau said : "The debt (public) mav now be easily managed. The war tariff must now be cut down." September 20th, tSSS, it said : "The American sytem,(protective tariff.) has been a wonderful success, and as long as it works such results why demand a change ?" September 27th, 1SS4, it said : "The Portland Advcrti.cr,on thecontrarv, says that the working men do understand that their wages are low and their employ ment uncertain ; and when traveling ora tors tell them that the tariff gives them steady work and good pay, they know bet ter." Now that same paper with craven servil ity bows to the behests of the party of free whisky, cheap tobacco, and high priced clothing and food that thrift and political influence may follow such fawning. Call early and secure harps tt W. F. Kead. The Herald of Saturday morning last said Oregon gave Cleveland 2256 majority in 1SS4. This is not true, as any school boy of ten years of age In the state knows Blaine carried Oregon. It said Vermont gave the largest majority at the late elec tion ever given. This is not tnic.as it gave 30,473 majority in 1S72. It savs Maine as sertcd her patriotism by the biggest record of any campaign since 1866. Now this is not true, because the republican majority in Maine this year la 18,495, while for Gov ernor in 1SS4 It was 19,709, for President in 1S84 it was 20,060, for Governor in 1S79 it was 21,176, and for President in 1S72 it was 32,335- I'c' the Herald try its hand at fig tires again.
