McMisnville, Sept. i6.Three new
cases of smallpox have heen reported to
tne Doara ot nealth during the last week in
different families, and it is now believed
that it will become cpidemic.if not already
so. It was thought at one time to be safe
ly quarantined.but somehow has eluded the
vigilance of the authorities. There is some
complaint, but the city authorities seem to
be doing what they can to prevent a furth
er spread of the disease. However, they
are inclined to be conservative.and it seems
that no radical measures will be taken. Sev
eral are leaving the town.
Lakayette, Sept, 16. It is learned here
that smallpox is spreading at McMinnville
in spite of the untiring efforts of the people
to confine tne dread disease to the original
case. It i reported that two of Mr. By
num's children and a Mr. Uodle.Mr. Ennia
and Mr. Morgageand another person.name
unknown.are down with the disease. Ac
tion has been taken by the authorities to
prevent the further spreading of the epidemic.

formerly a policeman nerc, just returned
from Colorado river.saysabout three weeks
ago, near Rock Springs, San Bernardino
county, a band of Moiave Indians tied a
young squaw who was reported bewitched
iu a siaae ana otirned her alive. Il w as two
hours before the horrible deed was complet
ed and the girl's screams silenced. The
Indians told Semon that it had been sever
alyears since they had burned a witch,
though several had been condemned since
then, but managed to escape.
Georgia Floods..
Savaxxaii, Sept. 1 6. -The flood in the
avannah has covered the rice plantations
near Savannah, and the rice crop is nearly
.(u.ic.u ioiai loss. Reports trom coun
try districts state that the lowlands are all
under water, and roads and bridges have
been carried awav, so that travel is almost
impossible. While there is great damage
to nroperity no deaths have vet beea re
ported. Sensational Suit.
New York, Sept 15. Lelia Frre, an
attractive burlesque actress, formerly with
the Adams' troupe and later making a hit
in the tambourine dance with Lydia
Thompson, sues comedian Nat Goodwin, for
$10,000 for breach of promise of marriage.
Fatal Fall.
San Francisco, Sept. 15. A Japanese
servant employed in a Post street lodging
house, missed the the elevator this morning
as it ascended. He caught the bottom of
the elevator hut relaxing his hold fell into
the elevator well to the bottom four stories
below. His injuries are fatal.
