A dispatch from New York City to the San Francisco Examiner says: "There has been considerable betting at the Hoffman House as to the result of the coming elec tion. Among the notable sets last night was the one made by John D. Townsend the well-known lawyer of this city. Mr. Townsend bet Matt Meyer $1,000 to $700 that Cleveland would be elected. The money was placed in the hands of Billy Ed wards. Mr. Townsend offered immediate. y to make the bet with Mr. Meyer five imes over. Mr. Meyer said: "That is all the money I have now, but I may have some to morrow." Mr. Townsend then said: "I have $15,000 more to bet the same way. Percy Dobbins, formerly of Philadelphia is one the most prominent Republicans at Long Branch. He owns two hotels, anum- ber of business houses and over sixty cot tages. The most serious conflagatioi in the hisiory of the city occurred at 6 o'clock this evening At that hour flame was observed issuing from the Queen chop house, which was sur rounded by rows of frame buildings. Europe's Grain Crop a l ailaro. New York, Sept. 14. Depew says the grain crop all over Europe is a failure, and if speculators here do not corner the market and put up the prices so high that Euro peans will have to fall back on Australia and InrJia.there Is going to be lots of money rolling into the pockets of farmers this fall. Neer' ofNeer City, was accidentally shot on xnursaay evening.while out hunting.about nine miles back of that place by his com panion. George Archibald, who mistook him for an amimal. He will be buried to morrow in the Masonic cemetary near St. Helens. He leaves a wife and children, one of whom is a confirmed cripple. A Train Wreck. The Dalles. Sept. 14 Freieht No. 0 two miles west of Mosier, fell through a burned bridge at I2;20 to-day. Fireman "unter jumped on a telegraph wire. one bent from the burnt portion of the onoge. engineer Morris Cavanaugh staid with the engine until she left the track.and then jumped. He was found by the fire man soon afterwards, in an insensible con dition, and taken to the caboose. He was brought to The Dalles. Three ribs are broken and he is injured internally ,but not fatally. The fireman was uninjured. The engine and six freight cars are a total wreck. The bridge was burned to a skeleton. The cars were consumed In the flames. Xovri.ties. S.Jones of the city schools has just returned from a two days' visit in the Puyallup hop fields. He says that unless hop pickers are secur ed in another week $200,000 worth of hops will go to waste. One grower alone has forty pickers for forty acres of hops. He shou!d have 140 pickers. His crop is val ued at $22,000. The farmers of the Puy allup Valley held a meeting yesterday and appointed a committee to go to Portland and secure if possible asurplyof white , wmi-i w ue 10 secure imnese nickers who will be returned to Portland as soon as the picking season is over. Many hop growers were strong anti-Chinese men during the agitation.but in this emergency the whole hop crop is at stake.and Chinese ay yt-t nave to he endured. The Yellow Fever. Jacksonville, Sept. 14. Tills has been the saddest day yet In the history of the lacksonvillc epidemic. The general gloom U made intense by grief at the loss of several of our very best citizens.
