Free trade discussion began in the House when this country was doing the largest business ever known, when iron production was at its maximum, when the gross rail road earnings were the greatest ever re- ported.when every mill was running at its full capacity, and almost every man in the cour try was at work for the highest wages since the war. In five months things have been almost exactly reversed. Railroads are passing or lowering their dividends.the price and production of iron have fallen, wages are being lowered. Philadelphia Press. If the above is true, what a powerful, unanswerable argument it is for a change in our economic system. If the system is built upon a foundation which Is so easily shaken.then our strength is that of delirium and our prosperity is a dream. A system which cannot be even discussed without the fatal results described in the above extract, cannot be a system of justice, and its foun dations cannot rest upon truth. The good and the true scorn criticism and opposition ; it is only the vile and the false that fear them. What a oowder magazine the com mercial system of this great country must be If a peaceful discussion of it produces 6uch an exolosion ! There is but one his torical precedent for such a disastrous ef fect of simple wind the destruction of the walls of Jericho by blowing on rams' horns ! In all ages opponents of reform have play ed upon people's fears as a means of ob struction. There have been ages when such m:ans produced a certain effect, but this is not one of them. If our tariff sys tem was just, equitable, and beneficial to all classes of our people, it would be so firmly planted Jn their affections that such assertions as the above would be unneces sary and unheard of. Farm, Stock and Home. THE SITUATION, Every fear of the results of democratic supremacy has been dissipated and eyery hope of the friends of the new order has been more than fulfilled. In 1S88 the con ditions of 1SS4 are reversed. It 16 the dem ocratic party now wl.lch enjoys the confi dence of the people. It is backed by the record of a splendid Administration. It has no broken pledges to explain. It goes before the country with a clear enunciation of principles which mean honest govern ment and an equal distribution of its bur dens. Its candidates are men who have been tried in the highest capacity ef public servants and found worthy of the public trust. There are no factions in the party, and its ranks are broken only to make way for new recruits. Every sign points to "a glorious democratic victory next Novem ber. Grover Cleveland will be the eighth President of the United States to receive a re-election Ex. The puerile charge that Cleveland was the British choice for President is rldicul Ious in view of John Bull and his stepson's astonishment and disgust at this message. Blaine's anti-Erltlshism, fresh from Joseph Chamberlain's dining room, has not raised a patriotic whoop since the meteor fell. It was a Democratic message clean through. No waste of words for cheap diplomatic courtesy, meaning nothing, but a plain, respectful and self respectful statement of facts, becoming a great man at the head of a great republic. Notice of Removal .Blaine once voted for free coal in Con. gress, but he now opposes the free admis sion of coal from Nova Scotia because it would Injure American railroads. Not word in behalf of the consumers of coal! Among the reasons why he opposes the President's plan of retaliation is that it would injure the Canadian Pacific Rail road! Amid all the changes in public affairs and all the vicissitudes of his career, no matter what he does, "is 'eart is true Poll." I take pleasure in announcing that I have re moved my old Store TO MY 32TEW BUILDING, On the corner of First and Broadalbin Streets. Thanking my customers for the liberal patron age they have bestowed on me in tho past I trust that with INCREASED FACILITIES and a large experience ance of it in the future. I may merit a conti n Now, since the full returns of the Maine election have been received and the ina jority has dwindled down to 18 495.it goes without savin? that democrats are more than pleased with the result. At the Sep tember election four years ago the repub licans had 19,709 majority ,so that this elec tion shows a loss to that party of 1214 votes. The democrats increased their vote of four years ago 3038,301! the republicans increas ed theirs only 1824. Now at this same rate of increase in New York the democrats will carry that state next month by 12,000 majority and Indiana by 1 1,500. The dem ocrats are much encouraged by this result' ine KcpuDiicansm Indiana are very vi cious toward the Prohibitionists. The party that once claimed to be for "free speech" are'interrupting, insultlng and abus ing Prohibition speakers in every portion of Indiana. "The Republican party," said Ben Harrison, "is hospitable to truth. It never shuns debate." And yet his followers in Indiana are rotten-egging temperance talkers because they advocate the election of Fisk, the Prohibition candidate. Samuel E. Young. We congratulate the republican party, A speaker a man by the name of Haynes has been found in New Hampshire who has the courage to defend the republican free whisky platform. It is true that this was done before the State Convention, a body of confirmed and safe partisans, but even to such an audience Mr. Haynes apology for the platform was plucky .Here is what he said : "The republicans of New Hampshire believe in protection, and will not evade the issue, declaring that, as be tween the protection system and internal revenue, If one must go it shall be the lat ter, and if," added Mr. Haynes, in parody of Patrick Henry, "that be free whisky, make the most of it." To test the power of imagination in the two sexes, a Dr. Duiand once gave to one hundred of his hospital patients a dose of sweetened water, and shortly afterward entered the room apparently greatly agi tated, saying he had by mistake administ ered a powerful emetic. In a few minutes four-fifths of the subjects were affected by the supposed emetic.and were'mainly men, while every one of those not affected were women. Grover Cleveland Is a great man. Since the publication of his retaliation message and letter of acceptance, republicans have lost all interest in the circumference of his collar in their sad and bewildered contem plation of the length of his head.
