LOCAL RECORD. M. A. T. There is now a hole in the toes of the shoes on each of the Man About Town's feet caused by contact with high headed nails evenings when electric lights were not near enough to do any good. It is getting so that it is J necessary for one to feel one's way along the street nights past protruding nails. A friend advises us to sue the city for the price of the shoes, but we are not long faced enough for that. Hundreds have been having the M. A. T's experience. Speaking of sucing a gentle man says the water from the ditch is widen ing his sidewalk and he is contemplating an action for damages. Tiikir Heavy Ones. The following Crook county tax payers pay taxes on $10, oooormore : B F Allen, $10,683 ; Bald win Sheep & Land Co., $30,000 ; Castle & Hutcliins, $14,789 ; Castle & Son, $18,760; D W Claypool, $13,125 ; Win Koster,$J9, 435 i W II Guilford, $11,730 ; Ilcisler Bros., $u38 ; A Hackleman, $33,781; ;T I Logan & Son, $23,165 ; C C Muling, $io,68c; ; M Sichel & Co., $11 ,soo ; W V JiE C M R Co-, $263,611 ; 1) M W R Co., 77."37 ! P. depot for the purpose of celebrating Mr. and Mrs. Adairs china wedding, or twen tieth anniversary of their wedding. It was a lively as well as musical company and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr and Mrs Adair were remembered with some fine china ware, of which there was a good display. Cosr $30. La it Sunday while coming from Corvallis, Mr Edward Will, of this -city, seeing fine Chinese pheasant near the road, draw a bead on it and tired, killed the bird and put it in his wagon, Mr Reuben Kiger saw the transaction, rushed out, went through Mr Will's wagon, discovered the bird and the next day made complaint, Mr Will went to that city plead guilty and paid o0 6 00. It seems aort of tough to see one person singled oat when dozens f other make it a bnsineaa to kill Chinese pheasants right aloDg. Farmers CosnRtss This new National Agricultural Society, with branobea in the various States, will assemble for itnportaut business, over machinery hall, at the fair grounds, 011 Wednesday, Sept, lttch. at 7:20 p. m, Tho offioora are : M Wilkins, Lane county, Presideut j John Osborne, Marion, Vice President ; Joieph Gaston, Multuoinah, Secretary, All far nersand all parsons di rectly interested in farming are urgad to at- tena ami take part. The boys are spar ing no pains or expense to make the affair perfect in every detail. Tickets without supper $1.50. Whistles. The Salem papers to-day give lively account of the antics o' Wm O'Brien, the young man who stole the cutlery of Stewart & So, and who is now earring a term in the penitentiary. Ha spends his time whistling, and only says he wants to see his mother. Poor boy. Coj-fee. Club Excursion The ladies of the Corvallis Coffee Club will sell excur sion tickets to Yaquina and return, good for trip to Yaquina on Sept. 19th only, and good to return until Sept. 30th, for $2 to, from Albany or Corvallis. An Immense Milker. Commissioner U. W. Phillips tells a Democrat man that he has a cow thatgives twelve gallons of milk a day. That would be forty -eight quarts or about 96 pounds. We pause in astonishment at such a record, and Mr Phillips word is good. Spectators Arrangements have been made for the accommodation of spectators at F" Co's bail, Friday evening, Sept. 14. An admission fee of 50 cents will be charg. cd for all who attend as spectators. Died On Wednesday evening, Sept nth, 1888, In this city, the Infant son of Mrs, Harry Noel. Boots and Shoes, Call at A. B. Mc Ilwain'a and see the ladies' kid and pebble goat shoe, for $1.50, former price $3.50. A Democrat man has seen the shoe and can pronounce it a remarkably cheap shoe for the former price. I Tun HorsiNo. The committee of ar rangements for housing the new steamer, nut last night and made out the program for the same, as follows: No. i's will meet In uniform and at 1 o'clock march to No, 2's hall, where the engine will he form ally received from the city. An address will be delivered by Mayor Cowan respond cd to by Hon. W. R. Uilycu on the part of me company. men the department headed hy No. i's with the engine will march to No. i's hall, which will be ncatlv decorated for the occasion, and the engine will lie tormally housed, followed by an exhibition of its work on First street. C, W. Watts, W. II. Warner and Chas. Crow- der were appointed a reception committee toattend to visiting tiremen. Our citizens should turn out. Losses Skitleu. The losses on the house and barn of Mark Hulburt were ad justed yesterday. The Hart fort Insurance Co., in which the house was Insured, which is ably represented here by Mr. II F.Merrill wus satisfactorily adjusted,as was also the loss on the barn In the Albany company, which was paid at once. Our contemporary says the loss in ihe Hartford "may be paid." There is not a more re liable insurance company in the world than the llaitford, and the loss has already been adjusted and the money for it is as sure as anything can be. There are no "may bes" about the Hartford. Of course the Democrat though advises people to insure ii. our home company; but that com pany neither expects nor wai.ts to carry all the policies in the county. From the Bay. Hon. Allen Parker, of the Bay, is in the city. Notwithstanding the so called strike by the fishermen Mr. Parker is running about 15 boats right along; but the catch is not large. Of the union men there only about a fifth are (ishinganyway, as they have no boats or nets of theii own. Mr. Parker offered 2 cents a pound, which is as much as he will give. Bkiso Sii teii. Mr. C. G. Burkhart, who went to Portland to arrest the Silinps editor failed to find his man ; he had fled out of the cltv.and it is thought he had been notified of the issuing of the warrant Mr. Burkhart will capture him if there is such a thing. At the last recular meetinir nf thn TTnlnn a unanimous votoof thanks was given to Mr Thou'aa Brink, wholesale furniture denlor in tbja city, for presenting to the Union, two toon, substantial tables. With these tables so kindly donited by Mr Brink and several others procured by the ladies, there will be a sufficient number to furnish the hall for any eolations or dinners. The Union now has its own dishes, cutlery, cooking utensils and tables, and is pretty well fitted up for gen eral house-kecping. The next thiog is the furnishing of the Reading Room, which be ing an enterprise of greater dimensions tlan furnishing too kitchen, had to wait until plans could be devised for maintaining it. We hope however, to have it oponed and running in good shape before many weeks elapse. Mrs SMI Henry, Nat. Evangel istio Su perintendent of the W C T U j a lady of great talent as a writer, has just published a volumn ol poems, entitled "Victoria," Press notices are yery complimentary, and apeak of it as one of her finest productions. The one thing which the liquor-men evince a special dread of is the loss of the legal stat us which the regulation or license system gives them. The amonnt of the fee they care, relatively, littlo about. Prohibition, with its contingency of bolts aud bars, is always and everywhere most unwloome to them. It IS true thev but it is also true that they leave no atone nnt.nrnfii tn n.... i .... r,c,su,, wuerever possible, its having any opportunity to "fail. " Their ac tion in the premises gives the lie to their words. The localities, in various States, frcm which the open dram-shop has been altogeth er banished, and the several commonwealths whish have substituted prohibitory for li cense legislation, have abundantly demon strated the wisdom of their action. Biblical admonition, and practical experience, there fore, alike point to legal prohibition, rather1 than the imposition of high-license foes, fori the successful solution of the great ethical liquor problem.
