This morning when a Demo crat man came down street he espied a large amount of human blood on the side walk in front of O. F. Hall. Tracing it up he found that small spatters of blood could be seen along the sidewalk nearly to the city's magnificent caliboose. His eyes opened wide In anticipation of at least a two stick Item. The thing was plain en- I. 'I'! Un.l Urn a Hfrr fil'ht with , knives or jimmies or something. The night watchmen had appeared and after a MnnHv nli-rrsitinn had succeeded in arrest ing the men and getting them Into the cali boose.their gore marking the passage to the city's incarcerating tombs. In anticipation of something like this our blood fairly danced. With sharpened pencil we rushed around for the three headed news item.and found It. A man had had a tooth extracted in the afternoon. It was followed in the evening by a hemorrhage, and while wait ing tot tnedcnusi me genwemun imu ly expectorated blood over the sidewalk all around the building. State Fair. Next week will be State Fair week, and a very large attendance Is anticipated. The Journal says : "The Sec rctary reports that the applications lor space are very large, and that the show of livestock will be extra In amount and kind At the race track more horses and finer than usual will show their speed and mettle, the directors having decided to offer a purse of $1,000 for a special trot, probably on the last day of the fair. This is exclusive of the $15,000 offered for premiums. It will be remembered that the coupon tickets for the six days entrance are for men $2.50, for women $1 ; day tickets, men, socents; women, 25 cents." A Curious Necktie. Mr. A. Judson Cole, who is the manager of one of the large Chicago wholesale houses In the line of gentlemen's furnishings, shows a novel necktie which he has just received from Texas. It Is a rattlesnake skin, made up In the form of a four-in-hand tie. The point rattle Is set In the centre of the outer fold to serve the purpose of a tie-pin. As It cllstcns and shows all sorts of shifting col- ors In tne sunugnt ur gauKui, - very attractive, It notcxaciiy conventional, lie. Mr. Cole says that it was sent to him as a sample, the sender saying that, as the rattlesnakes in his country is In exhaustible, he can supply as many of these strange tics as the Chicago nouse may warn. The Crops. The season for the farm Implement business is about ended.though it has lasted three weeks longer this year than ever before. A prominent lirm re ports that their sales this year of hay bales will aggregate 50,000 bundles, sufficient to kind 3,125,000 bales, which is equal to about 1,250,000 tonsof hay.' The hay crop this year will exceed last year's growth nearly coper cent, while the cereal crops will be at least 10 per cent better than that of last year. The recent jump in the price 01 wheat has Deen tne cause ungi luauy farmfTKhnvinfrmore extensively than ever of all kinds of Implements, and making central linnrovcments on their land. Telegram Loso Haired. They are trying to build a railroad from Astoria Into Tilla mook county, the one that will go t'irough Albany some time. Rumors were circu lated that for various reasons the road wouldn't be built. The Pioneer thus talks in a manner to Interest growlers general ly : "Such rumors arc only stnrted by a fsw antiquated moss-backs who never saw a railroad and wouldn't know one If they did see it. They haven't had their hair cut -ince they have been in the county, and having never taken a bath, the moss ad-' hcres to their backs like death to a nigger. The railroad is going to be built, and prop erty owners should do all they can to assist the enterprise." Mixed Matters. An Albany firm re cently received a letter stating that a cer- I tain amount had been sent them, a small account; but nothing was enclosed, and the money failing to come the firm wrote again, when the gontleman Insisted that the money had been paid as he had the re ceipt ot the postmaster, lie nail bought a postal note anu Kept it, minxing it was the receipt for the money. Married. In Oakland, Cal., on Wed nesday evening, Sept. 5th, Mies Mary Che ad I c was united in marriage to an Oak land gentleman. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Chcadle, cf this city. The Demo irat extends the happy couple its best wishes for long life and prosperity. Strike at the Bay. Considerable ex citement Is prevailing at Yoqulna Bay over a diffiuclty among the union fisher men and the canneries. There are one hundred and eight of these union men there, and they have set the price of sal mon at three and a half cents per pound. The canneries refuse to pay over two and a half cents.and have been paying two cents. As a result there Is a standstill. Only three boats went out last night, all non-union boats. One brought In 47 line salmon, tne other two twenty each, remarkably good catches ; but only pari 01 mem were posed of. The union men, it Is understood, will endeavor to nut a sto to the fishing unless their terms are submitted to. The run has becun to Improve, and unless the matter is settled the canneries will put up very few fish. A Remarkable Case The grand juiy last Monday returned a true bill against the boy John J. H. McCalllster, charged with murder In the first degree In shooting ana killing his father, R. 11. McCalllster, while deceased was asleep in his cabin near Y ood ville. on the nliht of July 2. 1888. He will probnblv be tried at this term of court. The boy is sixteen years of age, but his diminutive size would lead one to suppose him much younger. He has the appear ance and actions of a child of ten or eleven years old. He made a voluntary confes slon to District Attorney Colvig a few evenings 6ince in presence of several wit nesses. He acknowledged having com- mitted the murder, but stated that his mother, who resided in Lane county, was the instigator of the crime, having instruct' ed him to kill his father and then return home to her. He said further that hi itiother attempted the killing of her hus band at several former times, and that he thought it his duty to obey her instruc- Hons, although he is now sorry. He does not yet seem to realize the enormity ot 111s crime, nor icar punisnment ior it, out mum' tains a constant now of animal spirits, talki freely and unreservedly with all, and in many ways gives evidence of an unsound mind. Jacksonville Times. A Comparison. The following was picked up this morning on First street, and contains so many truths that we publish it, though minyinow: "Albany vs. Los Angeles, Seattle or Tacoma: Albany has splendid water power; neither of the other places has any. Albany has a magnificent farming country of beautiful prairie, with rich soil and interspersed with little groves of timber stretching away for thirty miles In every direction, which is well watered by numerous springs and sparkling brooks, li'l I led with mountain trout. Within from three to six miles of Albany good improved farms can now be bought at prices ranging from $20 to $5oan acre. Oregon as shown by the United States census report is the most Healthy state In the union, Albany is located in the most healthy part of the state, where the mountain nir and the in vigorating ocean breeze daily mingle with the odor of the fir, bringing health, new life and new energy to all." A Thresher's Trials. '"The hardest work about thrasbin',' said a grimy, per spiring youth, as he stopped his teams and jumped from a horse power before the blacksmith's, 'well, if I do say it, is the aw ful grub that we fellows have to swaller in many places; but some of these Webfoot gals though cook likeangcls, d'ye say? Yes, that's it, angels, a 'hul carload and some on'em as if they hadn't brains enough to put their togs on. And many on'em hadn't. That is betti r than lectur ing in Albany to a $2.50 house. Mr. Ed. Haves arrived m Albany to-day from Paloase City, where he has been in business, being called here by the dangerous illness of his mother. 1 EL was in business there before the tire, but wss burned out. He has siuce resumed business. The runaway horse mentioned in the Democrat last evening proved to belong to Mi Williamson, and was driven by Arthur Shane, a very gritty young boy. He was thrown ont before the horse was stopped ; but has only a few bumps to analyze. Now. here is a curious fact, of which 70a probably have never heard a hen is born into this world of sin and misery with every egg in its body it will ever lay, about 600 of them in alL Tney are all gathered in a little cluster within small sao, from which they are permitted to escape, when the bird is laying, one at a time. It used to be fish stories. Now it should be called "wheat" stories. Tne following is from the Jacksonville Timet : We learn thst i P Phipps threshed 400 bushels of wheat from six aores of ground in the Bear Creek bottom latt week, an average of almost G8 bushels per aure. Many yields are re ported of 40 bushels and over. Yesterday we mentioned Major Strong as being of East Portland.
