Purest Grove, Sept. 3. John A. An
derson, while working on the roof ff his
building about ten days ago,was overcome
by the heat, from the effects o which he
died last night. He leaves a wife and
three children. For the past five vears,Mr.

4 Brave Girl.
Riverside, Sept. 3. The family of John
A. Standing at Middle Orange Orchard
are all in the East and the house is in care
of Sarah Gray and J. P. Root. The latter
sleeps in the tank house. Sunday night
two men cut the blind and pushed in the
screen to the window in the girl's room.
She awoke, and taking a revolver fired
three shots, when one rf the burglars shot
her in the left tbijf h. A fourth shot struck
one o the mci wiio screamed, and both
left. The girl fainted from loss of blood.

McMixxvjLLE, Sept, 3. Fire broke cat
this morning at 1 A. M in the rear of Mrs.
H. P. Stewart's millinery store on B street,
and burned the building and contents,
spreading rapidly to adjoining buildings.
Pierce s restaurant. Brown's shoe store and
the o:d city hall and jail on fourth street
were consumed before the flames could be
slopped.
Attempted Suicide,
Pendleton-, Or., Sept. 3. Dr. F. C.
Campbell attempted to commit suicide by
taking morphine last night. Ifc was dis
covered in his room at ih; Golden Rule
hotel insensible, but in time to save his life
by application of restoratives and walking
