The labor cot in making $too worth of iron (ore is separately taxed) is $25. The Mills bill makes but 75 cents per ton reduction on iron. Bessemer steel is protected over $46 in every $100 worth of steel manufactured, and the labor cost of producing it in the steel mill is $9. Soap is protected ?io in every 100 man ufactured, and the labor cost of producing it is $3. Linseed eil is protected $35 in eye"7 $100 manufactured, and the labor cost of producing it is $5. Envelopes are protected $20 in every $100 manufactured and the labor cost is $11. Salt is protected $33 in every $100 pro duced.and the labor cost is $25. Nails are protected $33 in every $i00 produced.and the labor cist is $23. Wool is protected $4t hi every $iC3 pro duced, and the labor cost is not $5. Tin is taxed $24 in every $i00 consumed, and we do not produce tin-plate at all. Paper bags are protected $26 in every $i00 produced, and the labor cost Is $15. These articles are all common necessaries of life or of business, and all of them are protected by the Mills tariff bill largely above the labor cost of production here on the basis of good wages to labor, excepting tin.salt and wool.which are made free. Wool is made free to enable our woolen industries to double their home product, to give increased wages to labor, increased profits to capital and 2O per cent cheaper woolens to consumers. Tin is made free because we have no la bor engaged in its manufacture, and because a tax upon it is a needless tax upon the common necessaries of every workingman of the land. Salt is made free because it is used in every family, rich and poor, and because tariff taxes on it have bred an extortionate monopoly trust that robs every table in the entire country. The wages of American labor should be fully protected by our tariff laws, and all tariff taxes beyond the protection of wages of worklngmen, are simply protection to monopolies which employ free trade cheap labor and give American labor high taxes and low wages. OLONKI. HAMILTON FOlt CLEVELAND. Colonel Owen Ilamilton.oneof the most prominent republicans of Southern Penn sylvania, has declared his Intention of leav ing the republican party to support and vote for the election of ClcvelanJ and Thurman and tariff refo-. ni.Thc other even- ne he joined the George B. McClellan DemocraticLegionof Harrisburg.and mode rattlingspeech.ln which he gave his reasons for adyoculngthe re-eleq;!on of Cleveland. He is night watchman at the State Capi'ol, being appointed by Governor Eeaver. l ie sent to Governor Beaver his resignation of the position he held.as follows : Harrisburg, Pa., Aug. 20, IWS. Hon. James A. Braver, Governor of the State ot rennsyivania : Sir : I herebv lender my resignation as a watchman of the public grounds end buildings of Pennsylvania. My rer.son .or so doing are briefly that I am no longer in accord with the republican party ,espec:ally on the tariff question. I am in favor of a tariff, but 1 want to protect tne poor moor ing man and mechanic as well as capitalist and millionaire. I am not in favor of trusts, because I believe they impoverish ;he masses. I shall advocate and vote for Cleyeland and Thurman becarse I believe they represent the true interests of the peo pie. 1 ours rcsjicti.iuiij', UWO riAAULlun. Colonel Hamilton.up to within two years ago, was oiganizer of the Knights of Labor of a district comprising a dozen counties in Eas'ern Pennsylvania, with headquarters in this city. He was a hard and lite-long republican, slumped the sta'.e lor oarneia and Blaine, and swung many of the Knights over to General Beaver when he ran for Governor. In appreciation of these servi ces the Governor appointed him chief of the Park Guard at the capitol in Harris burg. Rev. J. R. Dangertield, pastor of one o: the African Methodist Episcopal Churches in Harrisburg, Pa., is out in a communica tion announcing his withdrawal from the republican party, because, as he alleges, it prefers free whisky to free wool. He de dares his purpose to vote for Cleveland and Thurman. ' Did it ever cccur to the ultro protection ists to go back to China for an illustration of the logical out come of their doctrines? Here, If anywhere, should be the'.r ideal of statehood. This is the closest corporation on earth, and its famous "wall" is a fitting emblem for high-tariff advocates. ' Mr. Blaine has tears for the English wage-worker who toils fifty-hours, under low tariff, for from $7 to $1 1, but none for the German laborer who, under a high tariff gets $3.50 to $5.50 for seventy-two hours work? Mr. Blaine is going to do Mr. Cleveland un in a magazine article, and when Mr Cleveland gets through with Mr. Blaine all that there Is left of hiin may be don up In a postage stamp. Judge Thurman condenses the issue of the campaign Into two sentences; "To stop the surplus the Democrats say cut dow the taxes. The Republicans say spend the surplus. - It is wonderful how perfectly Blaine and the British Canadians agree in oppos'.i the fishery message. They ioln In denoun dug it as a most improper and indeed un pleasant thing. Notice of Removal The earth may be the Lord's, the full ness thereof seems to belong to the trusts and pools and combines.
