THE DUTY ON WHEAT Hl'MHUU.
Republican demagogucs.in pursuance of
their high war tariff protection humbug,
try to convince the farmer that he is pro
tected by the 20 cent duty on wheat, and
tell him that but for this duty Canada
would supply all the wheat to the New
York and Chicago markets.
Precious little difference would it make
to the farmer" if this were so. Producing
as this country does, an enormous surplus
of wheat, she must necessarily export it.The
surplus is sold in the Liverpool market, in
open competition with wheat produced by
the ryot labor of India, the peasants of
Slavic Europe, and the ex-serfs of Russia,
The price at which American wheat is sold
at Liverpool fixes the price at which it is
sold in this country ; and it must necessari
iy be so, whether the tariff on wheat is 20
cents or a dollar.or five dollars per bushel,
or whether wheat is duty free. The Cana-
dian wheat which might be offered at New
York or Chicago in competition with
American wheat,if the duty were taken off,
is now offered at Liverpool in competition
with It, and with precisely the same effect
on prices.
In the nature of things no tariff, high or
low, can protect any commodity of which
the country produces more than it can con
sume. The surplus must be sold in the
open markets of the world for what thev
will bring ;' and what the surplus brings
will necessarily determine the price of the
whole. This is axiomatic. It is so plain
that it does not admit of argument. It is
assumed by political economy, just as it Is
assumed that 2 and 2 are 4, or that water
runs down hill and not up hill. The duty
on wheat is not a duty for protection or a
duty for revenue, but a duty for humbug,
It is laid for no other purpose than to make
the farmers believe that they are getting a
share of the "swag" produced by the sys
tem of licensed spoliation.
Cash wheat sold at Chicago Monday for
82 cents. It would have brought 82 cents
if wheat had been en the free list, and it
wouldn't have brought a cent more if the
duty had been a dollar a bushel Walla
Walla Statesman.
In the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Democrat
we find such dispatches from various parts
bf the state as these :
"Joseph Edwards and 87 other farmers of
Grand Haven township have left the g. o.
p. and have come out for Cleveland and
Thurman. Edwards is a bright, well-posted
Scotchman and has been looking up the
tariff, and has come to the conclusion that
it's no p.ace just at present for a farmer in
the republican party,and will do active.ag
gressive work for Cleveland, Burt and
Ford." . .,.
"The political horizon is somewhat dis
turbed in this vicinity ; It looks changea
ble and is evidently prepared for a heavy
shower of democratic votes in November.
Republican local factions are much divided
and dissatUfied ; republicans are joining
both the democratic and prohibition par-
tics while some "take to the woods" as the
means of showing their discontent. If the
state gains in proportion to this vicinity it
will go democratic by '75,000 majority.
Fruit growers kick on the "free whisky"
platform and will vote to keep up the price
on their wines which they seem to class as
a luxury. Congressman Ford Is looked up
on as an Ideal congressman, and men irre
spective of party will support him when the
proper time comes."
'George D. Burliton,oneof the solid men
of this township (Grand Haven) and an old
soldier, declared for Cleveland and Thur
man this morning. E. V. Branch, a life
long republican and former township clerk,
came nut for the democratic candidates al
so. There's a stampede toward the reform
ticket in this township."
The republican leaders are turning every
stone to find means of counteracting the
strong tide of democratic sentiment
throughout Indiana. The following letter
is the latest revelation. It is from a veter
an soldier living near Attica : "I tried for
fifteen years to get a pension, but could I
ne rer get my claim allowed while Dudley I
was at the head of the Pension Bureau. He
rejected my papers seven times. When
Black got at the head of the Bureau I ap
plied, and now I draw $24 a month. Now
Dudley is a lawyer at Washington, and he
wiitesme that I am entitled to $31
month. Why did lie reject my papers when
he had the power to grant me a pension ?
Now he knows I have got a pension and he
thinks by writing to me that he can bribe
me to vote the free whisky ticket. Take
warning all you soldiers that have got your
pensions under the Cleveland administra.
tion and vote for the man that is a friend
of the soldier,but is down on those that de
mand pensions but have no right to them.

to advocate the taxation of the people by a
protective tariff for the direct benefit of
individual or corporate Interests will be
looked upon as an enemy to the republic
and to the fundamental principle of free

committee from Minnesota,Michigan,Iowa,

be sent to their states, as the tariff reform
