Magnus Lunnow. the editor of the paper, said in reference to the matter: 'I cannot stand on the Chicago platform nor support the nominees of that conven tion. I heartily favor a radical reduction of the tariff such as recommended in the Democratic platform." You have always heretofore suppotted th-j nominees of the Republican party?" was asked. Invariably. Our paper has been a Re. publican paper always." What is the general feeling among the .Scandinavians?" Speaking for the Swedes,! can sav that they are certainly ir. favor of a reduction of the tarifr. All the leading, papers of the country have taken up that' view, and the mases are failing into line. The Swedes move slowly in thought, but w hen they reach a conclusion they are hard to change. The Szredi.iA Amcriam of Chicago circulates very largely up here, and it is a warm friend for tariff reform. As a result it has become independent, and the same is the case with otherinflucntial papers. All of these, vou must bear in mind, w ere Republican papers. There were no Democratic Swedish papers, anuoniyaiew years aco there were no Democratic Sw edish voters either. Now they begin to be independent, and the tariff question is at the bottom of it all." Last year the republican county conven- tionof Chippewa county appointed three farmers as their county central committee. Now the farmers of that state are up in arms against the frce-whisky-and-taxed clothing platform of the republican party, and these three committee men are no cx ception to the list of malcontents, but havi declared their purpose to vote for Cleveland and the "Old Roman," leaving the republi can party of that county without any organ' ization. A Tragedy. Pkmjlf.tox, Or., Aug. 13. The news comes that Mills Andrews, well known here, was stabbed fatally in Island City Saturday night' by a young man ramed Shaw. Andrews is proprietor of a livery stable in Island City, and young Shaw was in his employ. The two had a disagree ment of some kind, which resulted in the discharge of Shaw. In settling up An drews kept back a dollar of Shaw's wages. n...v..i unuiauj- occasioned uncomplimen tary remarks on the part of the boy. An drews then became enraged and slapped the young fellow in the face, who retaliated ny arawing a knite and plunging it in An drews back. The weapon sank deeo. and struck an inch below the heart. Andrews was taken to LaGrande for treatment, but at last accounts was bleeding profusely in ternally ,and not expected to liye. Shaw is still at large. Yellow Fev.r, Jacksonville, Fla.,Aug. i3.Vrhe fever panic continues. People aie leaving the city by every known means of exodus, but cities and towns both near and distant are continually establishing quarantine against us. The police force has been lncrea ed, and mounted police now patrol the streets night and day. No case of yellow fe -er has yet occurred among the negro popula tion. Business is completely paralyzed, and the negroes. out of work.gathcr in knots in the streets, and it is feared will soon be gin to plunder and pillage the hundreds of unoccupied houses.
