Washington, Aug. 8, About 4:30 o'clock this afternoon the heaviest wind and rain storm of the stason passed over this city from the Southwest. The day had been the warmest of tne season, the thermometer registering 93 in the shade. Several persons were pros trated by heat. J. S. Gaskeli. a well known Ohioan, says of the situation in that state : "There never has been a time since Hoadlywas elected when the republicaas were as dis gusted and crestfallen as they are now. In Ashtabula county the democrats will make a gain of 500 at least ; republicans on every hand are coining out for Cleveland and Thurman. Four new ones put on the Cleveland badges yesterday here. Repub licans are disheartened here, while on the other hand democrats are enthusiastic. We have some Sherman men here who were confident of carrying the election with either Sherman, Blaine, Gresham or Alli son, but a-ith Harrison and free whisky they ars afraid it will cost them their own state.which I think is true.
