If a man stated that a tariff of 42 per cent was a free trade tariff at any other time than during a political campaign the world would set hi.n down as a fool or an unmitigated liar. Between now and November the follow ing state elections will be held Alabama, August 6 ; Arkansas,Septcmber 5 ; Maine, September 10 ; Georgia, October 3. The poorest paid wageworkers in the Un ited States' are those eni;aed it manufact uring goods "protected" by high tariff laws The assertion cannot and will not be denied. A republican business man of Evans ville, Ind., writes a friend that "if It were not for the fool laboring man, and the d d Prohibitionists, I think we could carry the state for Harrison and Morton, but with these two classes of idiots in the way lam fearful we will lose Indiana." The Chicago Intcr-Ocam is one republi can paper that does not try to dodge the Issue or explain away the Chicago plat form. It is out plumply for abolishing all internal revenue taxation. That means free whisky, free tobacco and free oleomargarine. Thos: Nast, the great caricaturist who visited Albany last winter, made call at the headquarters of the National democratic committee in New York last week and had a long conference with Chahman Biicc.ex hibiting some excellent cartoons drawn In the interest of Cleveland's election. The yWiwratopublished at Newark.Ohio, prints a picture of a Chinaman with the ever present wooden shoe and long pendent queue, with the following printed beneath : Me washee bloody shirtee for republican office alle timee ulle velly nastee worse lan leplosee Cappee foullco Ickee smel lee bad alle nastee foulce makee me sickee." Harrison is wronsr on the Chinese ques tioned every worklngman in this country knows it. In 1877 he was against me rail road strikers. When he was in the Senate we nut bills in his care. He had them re. ferred to committees, and that was the last ever heard of them. At the time of the senatorial canvass there was not a labor or ganization (haWdid not denounce him. Andrew I. Wilson, ex-Master workman K. of 1.., Indianapolis. The Republicans in 18S3 proposed to re duce the tariff on an average of 20 per cent. but finally reduced it about 5 per cent, The Democrats now propose to reduce it on an average about 7 per cent. And still the Democrats are called free traders tor ai temntlntr to reduce the tariff one-third vihnt the Renublicans Dronosed to reduce it five years ago. The Republicans have shifted grounds now, at the dictation 01 their masters, the monopolistic trusts. The Dayton, Ohio, Workman, the labor organ of that state, says : "VVorkingmen by voting with the democratic party now have It in their power to down monopoly, which Is now championed by the republi can party, not bv choice but by force of circumstances. The man is an idiot, fool or knave who is not willing to see a reduction of tariffduties In thls.country, when that reduction will benefit nine out of every ten, and the tenth man will not be wrongcd.but this Iniquitous tariff system is wronging the nine." 'The golden opportunity is never offered twice ; seize, then, the hour when fortune smiles.and duty points the way." This ad vice Is just as applicable in the material affairs of mankind as In religion or morals The golden opportunity comes once to a city as an Individual. Albany's opportuni ty Is upon us. Will we then seize the ad. vantages of this opportunity and place our town in the broadway to permanent pro gress and growth The unerring finger of duty points the way. Let the citizens ot the town arouse from their lethargy and start the wheels rolling. Connecticut republicans are excited over the position taken by the Windham County Stamford, heretofore a republican paper. The Standard has the largest circulation of any paper In the county and announces that it shall support Cleveland and tariff re form. It says editorially : "Mr. Cleveland stands for equal and reduced taxation. Mr. Harrison,on the other hand.stands for high taxation, (higher, If necessary,) and free whisky and tobacco. By these issues the randldatc must stand or fall. With due respect for Mr. Harrison, we conscientious ly believe President Cleveland Is right, and accordingly shall support him. WACIN AND TAXATION. If high tariff makes high wages in this country it ought to do the same in other countries. Mexico has a higher tariff than this country has. Therefore, according to our thimblerig logicians, wages should be higher 1 1 Mexico than here. Hut the fact is that wages are not half as high in Mexico as here. Germany has a tariff for protec tion and Englsnd has not. Therefore, ac cording to these logicians, wages should be higher in Germany than in England. But what is the fact? Let us learn from high tariff authority. The Commissioner of La bor Statistics for the state of Maine, which is the state of Blaine, is a zealous defender of the 47 per cent war tariff. In his last re port this official gives the following tabu lated statement of wages in certain trades in England and Germany : WAUES PER WEEK. England. Germany. Bricklayers $7-5 $4-2' Masons 70S 4.07 Plasterers 7-8 4-43 Carpenters 7 4-" Blacksmiths : .. 7-37 4 00 Cabinet makers. 7 0S 4.25 Cig?r makers 6.07 3.6S Coopers '. 7-SO 3-97 Laborers 4-7u 3-11 Saddle and harness makers.... 6.63 3.96 Tinsmiths 6-5 3-55 According to the theory that high tariff makes high wages, workmen should get a good deal more in Germany than in Eng land, But according to this table they get almost exactly 77 per cent more in England than in Germany.
