LOCAL REC0I1D. A Biinim Hun nut. Nearly every city in the Northwest, Eugone, Colfax, to.. eh)., have received the following letter, which makes their residonts fuel for a few momenta as if thoy had truck somothing rich ; but Mr. Uornor i evidently one of tlio men c meot now-a-days who wan' a whole city a" a bonus for hi hcWry : "Katou Rapid. Woolen Mill. Eaton IUpidj, Miuh., July 9. 18S8. Pearsir Dues Colfax want an iudus try second to none in the North wont ? I have already purchased machinery for the equipment of a largo woolen mill, and on ac count of your favorable location and splendid wool-growing district, should like to locato in your city, and will do so if 1 can gut a little oucourapement from your citizens. What would be tliu proipoct of organizing a eoinpany for the above purnoso ? Yours very truly, E. IS. Horner," Chance for Spkcixatios. Talking about speculating Mr. Ashby I'carce has 500 acres of land across the river which he says he will dispose of for $30 an acre This would offer a rare opportunity7 for some enterprising man to make a few thou sand dollars. Some of the land Is worth a large price forgnrdening purposcs, orchnrdg etc., intact is the richest land in the Val ley, and it is to be surmised if Mr I'carce holds to this offer some one wilt come along and take him up. How to ue Occupied. When complet ed the new Srahan and Pcarce Block will be occupied by J J Dubruille, harness and saddlery ; Curran & Montcilh, real estate; Will iS Stark, jewelry j M W Parker, res taurant, with one room to be rented. Al ready some of the second story is spoken for, and when completed the whole build ing will probably be rented. Just now the demand isgreatei than tiie supply. Tiiky Howl. The Pendleton E. O. fairly howls jtself hoarse over the victory by its base ball club in the Baker City tournament, the Stars of that city winning the first prize. It takes three solid columns to tell about it, and we don't blame Pendle ton people for cheering. There Is nothing like having a boom even in base ball. Once Albany beat Portland and the trees fairly split from the echoes, but late years we haven't been able even to get up a three cornered catch. People need something of the kind to enthuse them. Certain of Tkxas We often forget that there was ever such a man as W. W. Saunders, but,. about the time he Is buried in oblivion some newspaper man happens to see him In the penitentiary and his next issue is sure to have some kind of a send off for the murderer. The following is from a Salem paper, and Is evidently In tended to be humorous : "Capt. W. W. Saunders, who is now hospital steward, was slightly under the weather, but he talked freely about the political situation. He as sured the writer that Texas would be sure to go democratic in November ; and he thinks, also, that Indiana and New York will, but he is more certain of the result in Texas, for he has lived there." WooimuRN. Woodburn has three gen eral merchandise stores, two boot and shoe shops, one hardware store, one furniture, undertaking and harness establishment, two blacksmith shops, two butcher shops, one barber shop, one hotel, two boarding houses, one saloon, two physicians, one dentlst, onc real estate office, one cannery and the best nursery in Oregon. Didn't Work. W.L. Barber, at Ellens burg, tied his hand up in a sling, walked into a lumbering camp and obtained a con siderable sum of money by representing that his fingers were cut off. He went to sleep In the camp, and while In the arms of Morpheus, the trick was discovered, and he is now in jail for obtaining money under false pretenses. Foot Racing:. Ben Illrsch has chal lenged Eph Cameron for another 100 yard foot race for $500. A Corvallis gentle man says Cameron can beat Hirsch eight 'cet, and would In the recent race but for stepping In some holes In the ground. W. K. Shanglc also w.ints to run him fifty yards for $250. Benton County Siief.p. For Benton county sheep the following from the Times is a remarkably good record : "M. S. Neugass and Win. Hartleys probably own the finest flock of sheep In the county, some of them being exceptionally fine anl mals. Four of them sheared sixty pounds of wool and the entire band of 900 head will average nlnei pounds." Weather Indications. For the 34 hours beginning at 12 o'clock, noen. Local rains, nearly stationary temperature. MiMNg News. Although the Santiam mines are in Linn county Marion county has the advantage over us in being the principal thoroughfare to the mines. Hence, the truth is, we get considerable of our mining news from Salem . Whatever the source we propose to keep our readers thoroughly posted In reference to these mines, as we expect big things from them in time. The following is from the Slates. mun : "Win. Uallilicr, ol tills city, who nas been rusticating at Mehama for the past week, was one of the first to hear of the strike in the Capital mine, on the Little North I' or k of the santiam, and with one or two others he went In immediately upon the receipt of the news. With L,. C I'lsh- cr, U. A. Whale and J. I). Jordan, he filed on tunnel claims across the creek exactly opposite to the Capital mine, on the exten sion of its ledge. Mr. (ialliher named his claim the Bushncll, and another was call ed the Eclipse in honor of Sunday night's lunar exhibition. Mr. liallihcr saw the new ledge in the Capital, anu he says it is om six to eight feet in thickness, instead of three, as at first reported. The quartz is very ricn, and will pan out In large quan tities. Mr. Wright and Mr. Whale arrived at Mehama late Monday night, and left yesterday morning at 7 for the mine, doubt less arriving there by noon. A Snake Item. These quiet days most an thing suggest an item to tbe hungry editor. Yesterday afternoon a couple ladies coming down First street met a striped snake about two feit long. With little screectes they spr ing alicritous'y into the middle of the street, as if a rat had been after them. and hantoned away from the awful thiug. Where It came troni count not be ascer tained. The fact that it was parading the street in front of a saloon led some to believe it was a piece of delirium tremens; nut we are no judge iu such matters, and will not give cur opinion ou the subject. Qt'EKK FinuniNU. An Astoria paper has figured out that that city is fleeced out of $100,000 every year by snide shows. Last year it had tweuty-six shows, which would make the leceipts at each entertainment about $4000, which is tea times too much. Git out your pencil again. Brother Curtis' It is a fact, though, that the public is im posed on by third class tramps who charge us one dollar for a two bit show. The Dem ocrat has made it a practice of opposiog this and will do so in the future. There is no justice in Albany paying $1 for what is givon iu Portland for 50 cents. Two Women. Elizabeth R. Whcaton and Mary J. Moorman, the prison Evangel ists, preached and sang this afternoon to a large gathering of people on the corner of Broadalbin and First Street. Their mis- sion is to visit prisons and preach to the criminal elements of the country. They have, we understand, visited nearly all the penitentiaries in'the United States, and are said to do much good. In 6trong contrast to the reception generally given the S. S. Army they are treated with the great re spect they deserve. Rupture Cured. No charges for ex amination or consultation, and a eyre guar anteed in every case undertaken or money refunded. Of the many cases treated by Dr. Porterfield during the past year in Red Bluff and Redding, not one but will recom mend this treatment highly. Don't neg lect this opportunity. The sooner a rup ture is treated the easier it is cured. Dr. Porterfield will be at Rust llouse.rooms 26 and 27, Albany, July 26th to 31st. Kirk Tiikm. f)o not feed the tramp these harvest days nn ler any circumstances. Several have been around begging, and, in stead of being fed, should be kicked into the treet. Sympathy is all right in its place; but the able bodied man is not entitled to any. There is a li demand for harvest hands and the harvest field is a good enough place for any bodjV All gnat men have been there sometime. Why not tbe autoorats of the present generation, the tramps. A Qkeat Need. tine of tbe greatest needs of Albany is a boxing school, where men oan learn to strike from the shoulder, and not claw like a wind mill and serateh like a cat It is one of the most peculiar facte of the present age that when men get mad they for got the proper use of their muscles, and in stead of keeping the handle on, fly it off in their groat hasto. - Hay. In giving the price of hay, a die tlnction should be made In favor ot first class timothy. Considerable has been sold for $9 loose and $3 In large quantities. Cheat is about $6 and $7. A large amount has been baled this year, $2 being the pre vailing price for bailing, though, until this season the price was $3. Dr. Porterfield. Dr. Porterfield, the famous rupture specialist, comes to this city with the highest endorsement of the press where he has practiced and we would advise all our friends who may be in need of service of that character to apply to the Dr. at once. His past success is guarantee of his future usefulness. The Yaqvisa Excursion. Tbe excur sion to Yaquina bay next Sunday will cost only the small sum of $2, the cheapest yet given. The train will leave Albany at 6:30 A. M. and Yaquina City at 6:30 P. M . giving exouraioiiists about eight hours at the bay. Tickets for sale at G L Hlackoian's. . A Finoer. While assisting to lower one of the swinging ladders on the St Charles hotel yesterday, Mr Bob Moore had one of his hands can oh t in the staging, resulting in the litt le finger ot his ri-jht hand boing near ly severed from the hand, and Mr Moore is now a gentleman of leisure. A R. R. Rumor. There Is a rumor In circulation, just how well founded we do not know, that the overland trains will ar rive at Albany two hours later, and the Eugene train will run to Roscburg arriv ing here earlier In the morning and later In the afternoon.
