E-TIMUKa, o( MiiUiionnh'-'ciraiity E. K, 8KIPWOKTU, of Umatilla, count)'. BARCLAY HENLV. The Orcgotian yesterday had a long dis patch detailing the statement that Ex-Con gressman Henly of California had bolted the democratic ticket and would vote for Harrison, As bearing upon the subject we give below a statement made by the San Farncisco Examiner of 19th Inst : "A rumor prevailed Friday to the effect that ex-Congressman Barclay Henley, the wellknown attorney and politician, had de cided to "bolt" the Democratic ticket and work for the success ol Harrison and Mor ton. A representative of the Examiner inter viewed Mr, Henley at his office in the after noon for the purpose of ascertaining if he had actually transferred his allegiance to the Republican party. The truth was quickly ascertained. "The statement that I haye left the Democratic party is untrue," said Mr. Hen ly, decisively. "What is more, I have never countemplated any such action. I do not known how such a rumor could have originated." The Oregonian of to-day contains a deni al of yesterday's canard The Mills bill proposes to reduce the tax on pig iron only seventy-two cents per ton. The Iron masters of Pennsylvania petition ed Congress declaring that that meant the price of their iron would fall seventy-two cents per ton, which would ruin them, and if the tax were reduced they would pull their fires and quit business. They said this within two months and the politicians took it up and repeated it in a thousands forms to affect the party relations of votcr6 who have no lime, or lack inclination to think for themselves. Now witness the commentary of their own conduct upon the claim made by these iron masters. Within .two months they solemnly declared that they would be ruined if the duty on iron were reduced 72 cents per ton, assuming that it would cause a like reduction in price. And now they have voluntarily reduced the price of pig iron $2 per ton and are running full blast day and night ! What is one to think of such trifling by these men with the revenue legislation of this coun try ? If 72 cents off a ton would ruin them, how can they stand a reduction of $2 ? An yet they do stand it.and lia -e more buslnei 'han ever. 'TIITKCANOK AND TYl.Klt TOO." There is an old line whig in this city, Mr. Eli Carter, who voted for Grandpa Har rison in 1840 who informs the Democrat that he will give Mr. Cleveland his ardent support. He 6ays while William Henry was a good man, all grandsons of presidents would not necessarily make 'good presidents. Now, that the Mills bill has passed the price of wool is advancing. It seems that business has entered the campaign against free w hisky and taxed necessaries of life. You ought to see the cai toons in the cur rent number of JIarfei't. NOTTC1S ia ;.. .1,t k. 1 7 , j B' s" mo nullum meeting of the stockholders of the CapitalGold uu ouvar wining company ot the city of Salem, Oregon, will be held at the office of the undersigned in Griswold'a block, in said oity. on the second Thursday, the 9th day of august, moo, as o o ciock p. m., lor the election ot direotora and for such other busi ness as may come before the meeting. Salem, Or., July 23rd, 1S88. S. F. Chadwick, Seciotary. It now appears extremely doubtful whether the republican majority of the Senate finance committee will be able to . agree upon a substitute for the Mills bill, In the first place the republican Senate would fear to make reasonable amend meuts to the Mills bill on account of the fact that a conference committee of the two houses might reach an agreement and thus settle the tariff question, and leave the republican party before the people with no issue but the memory of the war, upon which of course they would founder long before the campaign should end. In the second place the republican members of the Senate cannot agree among themselves on a tariff bill. It Is said five of six repub llcan Senators favor the free Wool clause In the Mills bill, which creates an irreconcila ble difference on that subject. There are many other points on which republican Senators cannot agree, hence everything points to the fact that they will be com pelled to dodge the tariff bill. S. 1). Riggen of Portland, Manager of large number of Insurance Companies out In a long article in the Sunday's Oreg' omait in which he says : "Hitherto I have uniformly voted for three publican nom I nees for president. But on this occasion if I shall live till the 8th of November propose to vote for Urover Cleveland." One by one the honest, intelligent voters are falling In with the right. And now comes the California Democrat the leading republican German paper of San Francisco and declares its determina tion to support Cleveland. The rcpblican Germans all over the country teem to be restless and dissatisfied with the awkward attitude Into which they have been placed, and thousands of them are coming over to Cleveland. Keep your eye on them. Pierce Kane, a manufacturer of woolen clothing at Sandlake, will vote against re duction of the clothing tax. When asked he rcpllej : "I know my business ; I am vot ing for Kane." For President. The Ghost of 1S40. For Vice President the Substance of Wall street.
