Eds. Democrat : The above appears to be the watchword witli democrats, and republicans are alive to oppose any measure democrats may sug gest. We have had two excellent speeches here, one by Hon. J. K. Weatherford and one by lion. las. II. Slater, which have made us'all alive on the subiect. We hear of free trade and protection on every corn- er,ana 01 oreaa and Butter. Some appear to think if any of the duty is removed we will not have any more bread and the cream will fail to rise on the milk, and the poor laborer will have to beg, that wool will have to be given awav. that soon the English will eive (roods awav here, and heaven only knows what will not befall us, yet when they talk cf free trade they must not have read the political historv of our country.for it does appear that on the 30II1 day of next April it will be one hun dred years since Washington took the oath of olhcc as President of the U. S., a..d he soon after delivered his inaugural address, and on the organization cf the House Mr. Madison moved a resolution to lay duties on certain wares and merchandise, since which time there has been more or less duty and said duty has been increased and decreased as the need of the Government has from time to time rtquircd, and in 1S13 the revenues of the country were increased and in 1810 wc have our hrst protective tariff and it was 25 per cent on most arti cles of import, yct we are called free traders to-dav for warning a reduction from an average rate of 47 per cent to an average rate 01 42 per cent. Iow in 1020 and 29 we find our duty on woolens increased to 40 and 45 per cent and in 1833 again reduc ed, and that because it was so high that the people were in an open revolt against the taritt ot 182S, and so we could tollow our tariff from time to time until 1883 when Chester A. Arthur sent to Congress his free trade message, and we had the tariff com mission of that year and until lSSS, when Cleveland is denounced a a free trade man. And why f Simply because the republicans arc out and some one is in who has got the nprve to stand for the ripht. and thev are afraid the people will send him back and the saucy democrats w ill get all of the offices and they will be out of a job for an other tour years, and perhaps lor ail time. Now let everv precinct in the countv, yes, in the state, organize a campaign club and go to work, and let us all put our shoulders to the wheel as one man and come up in .November smiling.and turn defeat in June to victory in November. Harrison night policeman at Gilroy tried to arrest a Span iard at a late hour last night, when the man drew a pistol and shot at the officer three times. One ball nipped a piece out of Har rison's ear, one went through his vest un der his left arm and the other went be tween his lingers breaking a cane in his hand. The officer then drew his weapon and began firing. He put thee bullets into the Spaniard, one throgh the body near the heart, one through the bowels and one through thigh. The Spaniard died this afternoon. Indians Aroused. Port Town-send, July 24.--John Morri son, a passenger for San Francisco from Skeena river, British Columbia, where In dian troubles are apparently imminent, passed through here to-day and was inter viewed by your correspondent. He said he came to Victoria on the Cariboo Fly.di rect from the scene of trouble. The In dians were thoroughly aroused, and openly expressed their intention of punishing the whites for alleged grievances in killing one of their number while resisting arrest, un less due reparation was made. The Indians said also that reinforcements of the Metla kahtla Indians from Auneattee Island, Alaska, were expected to join them. Mor rison further said that the trouble was mostly due to several halfbreeds who were followers of the rebel Riel in the Red river rebellion two years rgo. These men are fairly educated, and have been among nearly all the Indians in Northern British Columbia, endeavoring to incite rebellious sentiment. , - , tl ' '':INNVILLE'(bLLEEE McMinnviUe, Or.
