LOCAL RECORD. I'iitatuks. -The Marion county papers are having a fierce quarrel over tlic ques tion of the condition of the potato crop. Here is the last from the Appnil : "The Capital Journal displays its ignorance on the matter pertaining to the farm when it says that the potato rot as spoken of In the should see that such a rule is 'observed in Appeal is all "bosh." We have examined reference to their children. this crop to our own entire satisfaction and ,.. . .... find the report correct. The liurkanks ,,,K ' ',EK AV.-Saturday night seedling variety seems to be worse affected about two o'clock the next morning Mr.T. than any other' kind ; the tubers when cut 1 L. Wallace discovered a man prowling 1 iik .Scio Hrancii. The mcctlngcalled to be held at Scio Friday evening by the citizens of Scioto consider the proposition of the Orcgonian R. R. Co. to build a branch road was postponed until the pro posed route shall have been surveyed. A meeting to be called st any time by chair man of the enterprise. Mr EJO'Conncr the County Surveyor, left this morning for Hclo to make a preliminary survey of the ioiuc. The propoiition of the Company is mat inc cmens ot ."clo snail survey the route, grade the road and lay the ties. The Company offers to lay and furnish the rails and then to abandon the West Scio station, and make Scio the telegraph station and poslollice, giving that city all the trains that run on the road, a privilege that will be a great one for Scio. DkownkI). From Mr. Chapman, of Scio, we learn the particulars of a drown ing affuir in Thomas Creek, near that city yesterday. The nineteen year old son of Mr. Eads, or Fountain, was in bathing alone, a couple little boys being on the bank of the creek watching him, when he suddenly got into water over his head, and, being unable to sw im well, strangled and disappeared. The boys notified the near est neighbor and the body of the unfortu nate young man was recovered after some search. Right here it may be remarked that no one, however good a swimmer, should ever go in bathing alone, and parents open display a black speck In the center with yellowish streaks running through the potato, denoting that they are affected with some disease." Idkntii'ikii. The statement is now made that the remains found at North Powder, in Hukcr county, have been posi tively identified as those of Willis Skiff. A dentist and another person who had occas ion to examine Mr. Skiff's teeth a short ime before his disappearance, made the identification, ft is probable that certain persons will be arrested, as the absence of the body is all that prevented the convic tion of the persons tried for the crime. OrR Rksorts. A large number of campers are already scattered around Soda villc and some at Waterloo. . The number attending these places on Sunday particular yis very large. The soda water, a splen did beverage when taken directly from the springs and good even when bottled, added to the cool mountain breezes, makes both of these places very desirable for summer resorts, and many prefer them to the sea side. Should the railroad be continued to Sodavillc it would become one of the most frequented resorts in the state. Tiik Ecmpsk. The eclipse of the moon came off last night as advertised, which proves that it pays to advertise, for a large number took extra pains to see the free ex hibition. Doors were opened at 6:44, but the show proper did not begin until about an hour later. At 10 o'clock the earth was fairly between the sun and moon and the lights were all out, making it as fine an opportunity for sparking as passing through a tunnel. An eclipse of the moon is an Interesting sight because not very common. It is not qnitc as awful as an eclipse of the sun ; but it does pretty well for a heated summer evening. Wheat Remaining About 18,000 bush els of wheat remain In the Albany Fann ers' warehouse unsold, and In the face of the fact that most of the slorers will have to pay double storage, the time being up a few days ago. That seems sort of a poor policy to us. Those who have a regu lar time for selling, except, uncommon cir cumstances surround them, arc the ones who make in the long run. Business Chance. Saturday e.ening Mr. Milt Miller sold his drug business in this city to Dr. L. W. Guise, lecently of Kansas. Mr. Guise left yesterday for his former home after his family, leaving his on here in charge of the business. Dr. Guise also purchased the house and lot of Mr. H. Flindt adjoining that gentleman's family residence. Mr. Miller will be come a disciple of Blackstone. Exercise. Albany young ladles and small boys go in bathing In the Ditch. For exercise it is simply Immense. The swift current makes Ita bumplty-bump business that brings Into play all the muscles of the system, particularly those controlling the tongue. The person who sccessfully makes the transit from Montelth's pasture to Broadalbin street ought to be able to wash clothes or fight Sullivan. Woi-ld Like Him. Prof. Coomer, who has so ably led the II. A. C. band, of Salem, for several years, contemplates leaving that city. Prof. Coomer Is by odds the hest cornctlst as well as leader In Oregon, ami we suggest If Salem docs not keep him that an effort be made to bring him to Albany, where there Is material for a "m-ciass band. Ii'R Cream Festival. A supper and cream festival accompanied with a musical concert, by the Tangent Brass "and, will be given at Tangent on Satur day night, July 28th, under the auspices of he lady friends of the band. Admission, utiuu ing concert, supper and Ice cream 35, TK Small Boy. The Albany boy now glories In a. curious little contrivance, the "lea for which he secured from an Eastern PPer. With revolver In hand. Mr. Wallace opened the door and asked the visitor what he wanted. Instead of ans wering he started on a run. He wasorder ed to halt, but failing to do so Mr. Wallace fired more to frighten him than to hit him with the former result, for the fellow ran and bounded over the fence like a deer, disappearing around a house. Cold lead is the proper thing for these midnight maraud ers who refuse to account for their conduct, and it is to be honed some of them will ijet hit. ' h JJask Ball. A base ba'l tournament in Oregon Is a great thing and as rare as an eclipse, hence we keep track ot the one be ing held at Baker City. Saturday the re sult was as follows: LuGrantle and Pen dleton, i8 to loin favor of Pendleton. Bak- City vs. Nortli Powder, five innintrs. Score: 10 to 8 in favor of Baker City ; and uoise uy vs. L,aiirancle. Score: II to 4 tn favor of I.aGrnnde. To-day's pro gram is Boise City vs. Pendleton in the lorenoon, and Uakcr City vs Pendleton in the afternoon. Took Him Up. A shoe black drummer undertook to sell Ike Patterson, of Gilbert Si Patterson, a bill of b acking, Friday. Patterson in a bantering way, agreed to give an order, to be paid after Cleveland was elected. The drummer took thcordcr too quick. Patterson is telling his friends that lie got the blacking for nothing, but he will be so well polished off on the 6th of November that Gilbert will be able to use him for a looking glass. Vidette. Wants to Bet W. A. Scog, jin, the ex-Councilman Saturday informed a Port land .Veiw reporter that he had received an order from a Montana capitalist to bet $lo,oob or $io,ooo that Cleveland will be elected, or to bet the same sum that the Democrats will carry New York. Mr. Scoggln is ready therefore to take a few Dots tram tnose wnotccl like risking their money. Here is a chance for Mr. Vance and some of the other Albany gentlemen who have plenty of cash to risk on the re sult. Yaquina Bay. It ia taid by partiea who have visited that section that they have not seen a single crop worth harvesting on the road between Echo and Lexington, and that dire discouragement stares farmers in the face. Some are selling fai ms and improvements for what they can get, and others are leaving everything. The situation it indeed a gloomy one. -il. O. Mr. E. J.
