LOCAL RECORD.
AN 1IOSORAI1I.SCOKHEKTONBST.- -The
Waterloo correspondent of the Lebanon
Erprest talks as follows : "It was report
ed here Sunday that it was generally be
lieved in Albany that there were no con
veniences to be found at Waterloo. The
readers of the Express are aware that this
is a mistake, and for the benefit of the read
ing public we will say that it is well to sub
scribe for a paper that shows In Its social
columns as well as its advertising columns
Tills the Express Is honorable enough to do,
VVaterlooo has the following accommoda
tions : A hotel, a feed stable, and a first
class country store, where one will find
groceries, provisions and all kinds of can
ned goods, and in fact nearly everything
needed by campers and tourists." Now,
fu the first place Albany people know ex
actly what accommodations there are at
Waterloo. The Dkmocrat has kept them
posted for a great many years. It always
lias in a general way allowed correspon
dents to give the business of their respec
tive places, and is glad to have them do so;
hut it does not allow them to run tree ads.
in their Items, and neither will the Express
man when he has had the experience we
have. No live paper allows it. It is all
right to say Mr bmith is running a store at
Waterloon, but it is not to say that "Mr.
Smith, the popular grocer, has a first class
stock of canned goods, produce, etc. 'Call
on him when in the burg, etc." That is
sponging something for nothing for others
und is what the correspondent of the Ex
press has been trying to do with the Dkmo
crat for years, if weare not grandly mis
taken in tnc identity ot the gentleman.
Takk a Drink. Yesterday afternoon

Postal Telegraph office was taken pity on
by the handsome operator and invited to
come in and have a nice cold drink of ice
water. There was the pail on the floor with
a lump of congealed Northpole in It, and
on a hook In the wall was a tin cup. The
1). M. Innocently reached for the cup ; but
concluded not todrink for a moment on
account of an Edisonan warning in the
shape of a small sized earthquake that
permeated him for the sixteenth part of a
second. A second effort brought the cup
to time, resulting in a very refreshing
drink. The cup was dropped on the hook
In returning it to its place. The hook, you
see, was connected with a battery through
the adjoining room. One callous handed
old farmer was invited to drink, and of
course accepted the invitation. He never
winced, but took his drink and returned the
cup as if nothing had happened. The joke
was on the other side then. The arrange
ment was gieatly appreciated by the large
number innocent enough to get taken in.
8 o'clock. Twe or three Independent
merchants at Salem have begin closing
their stores at Salem at 8 o'clock except on
Saturday nights. As it seems to be Im
possible to obtain any united effort in Al
bany on the subject it Is to be hoped the
same rule will be followed here by mer
chants who believe clerks are entitled to a
little freedom in this world. The public
will appreciate their humanity and give
them enough extra business during the day
to make up for the very small amountthey
might possibly lose.
Anick Party. You may read that both

It was held last evening at the reaidenoeo!
Hon S M Pennington, and was given by the
Young People' Christian Endeavor Society,
of the Baptist ohuroh, members of tome of
the other Endeavor societies being invited
guests. Those who attended pronounce it
an uncommonly enjoyable afftir. Games,
sociability and a very palatable lunch waa
the program.
Chicken Pir. A very enjoyable chick
en pic and Ice cream lawn social was held
at the M. E. parsonage last evening. Bet
ter chlchen pie was never eaten by an
editor or Methodist minister on a circuit,
and the Icecream was just the opposite to
the sociability, one was cold and the oihtr
warm. The attendance was good and the
receipts nattering.

Dear SirsAs we are going to move to
Oregon in the near future or this fall I
take the liberty to address you requesting
you to favor me with a sample copy of your
paper by return mail, if possible,'you will
confer a favor on me. Should want to
rent a house or rooms and a barn this com
ing winter, a short distance from your city,
3 or 4 miles, with a small piece of land to it,
with a pasture for two horses and one cow.
Let me know by return mail. Also rent
per month. Respectfully,
MlC-IIAEI. DONIIOCSER.

The above is one of many letters that
come to the Democrat office. We are
unable to answer the gentleman's ques
tions, so we give his name, and our real
estate men, farmers and citizens generally
are at liberty to storm him with proposi
tions, lie is evidently a German, and, by
the wav, some of our most thrifty farmers
are of this class, in fact as a rule they rather
lake tnc lead In knowing how to make
both ends meet.
ItSavku Him. "I won a case in the
police court yesterday," said Counsellor
Butcher to a St. Paul reporter, "by flour
ishing this red silk handkerchief. A po
liceman arrested my client, a young baker,
for obstructing the sidewalk near the un
ion depot and preferred charges against
him of being disorderly and resisting an
omcer. . 1 hey also accused him of being
an anarchist. I flashed this bright handker
chief before the judge and said: 'Your
honor, if this man had been seen carrying
such a thing as this twelve months ago he
would nave been banged. JNow it is the
emblem of righteousness and honesty, car
ried by the entire democratic party as the
fiag which will lead them on to victory.'
My client was promptly discharged.
Moving. Mr. S. E. Young has begun
moving his stock of goods into his new
quarters just northwest of the Democrat
office, probably the best s'tore rooms in the
Willamette Valley. Including basement
he will have about 15,000 square feet of
room, and, besides, will, in time, have a
warehouse across the alley. Finely lo
cated, his already very large business will
be increased. Large, commodious, well
arranged stores speak for a city as well as
for the proprietor, and this is one of sever
al things that is increasing the me
tropolitan appearance of Albany.
Tried to Suicide. A stranger who gave
his name as Frank Willis, of California, at
tempted to committ suicide last night at
Salem by jumping off the platform Into
the millpond near the water works, but
either the shallowness or the coldness of
the water induced him to change his mind,
for he waded out himself and was taken
charge of by parties who saw the deed, and
who turned him over to an officer. Willis
said he was a miller by trade, nnd is from
California.
Suspicious The Newport paper thinks
it has gotten track of a genuine opium
smuggler who recently came Into Yaquina
Bay all alone In a suspicious manner. We
think it has not. This is a terribly suspi
cious world and it only takes the shadow
of a tack for everybody to imagine a spike
tobe around In this case the circum
stances do not necessarily Indicate opium at
all.
Hay. The size of the hay crop very
naturally affects the size of the price. Con
siderable has been sold for $4 In the field,
and it can be purchased and delivered in
the city for $6 or $7, which would make it
about $10 baled.

of his time that when the hodman came up
with the next hod very little of the former
