The fo.lowlnj; from n Snlcm paper Is a very prettily word ed picture of the garden spot of the finest Valley in the world : "Willamette Val ley as viewed from Marion county heights in spring time, presents as fine a landscape as can be had anywhere- on the Pacific Coast. From this point the Valley appears as a grand painting deeply set in an emer ald frame-work ; on the west the coast mountains curve away to the south till they seem to merge into the Calapooia range, which extends east to the Cascade from where the Willamette river, freed from its mountain fetters, sweeps majestic ally on its meandering course through the Valley helow. Near the Calapooia, Al' hany prairie and its surrounding up-lands arc dimly outlined, some forty miles away. As the eye follows the course of the river, on through the evergreen forests and bloom ing hills, the lofty uplands of folk and Yamhill coMnties, appear on it's western banks, opposite Marion. , The woods that skirt the little streams which "put in" to the river from the uplands on either &ide, are thickly strewn with hlooining forest trees, on which many of the most beautiful colors are excpiisitly blended, while glimp ses of coxy farm-houses are caught through the foliage of grand old orchards which send out their snowy petalson each pass. ing breeze. The three counties mentioned, with their far-reaching prairies and picture- csque Highlands, tonctlier with Marlon s beautiful capitol city, arc truly the gems of me vaucy. Claimud. The following is from an ex change and is hut one of several items we have seen on the same subject : "It is claimed by good legal authority that the act creating the office of County Recorder in Linn, Marion, Washington, Yamhill, Clackamas, Clatsop, Umatilla and Union counties is unconstitutional. This may lead to serious complications as those offices have been filled by elections in the -various counties named." Theie is probably noth ing in these claims. The statute on the subject is plain, nd we doubt if good legal authority says the act is unconstitutional. Tiik Company, The Fanner' and Mer chants Insurance Company of this city, is doing a fine summer Business. Its field is the Northwest, the company being represented in every place of any importance in Ore gon arid Washington Territory, It is a splendid company to insure with because it is not only safe and reliable, but is a home institution, and the premium paid to it is circulated at home. Minins Fevkr. Several Albany men are getting "worked up" on the mining question. Even the pioneer barber, Jos Webber, lias caught it a little, and a day or two ago left for Quartzville, in camp.iny with a California miner. Next week C. E. Brownelb Mr. Donclly and two or three others will start for the same place. The Bonanza mine, located by Messrs. Woodin, Read and associates, has now as good prospects as any claim in the Santiain region. All that is needed now is money to develops all these claims. Memory Clltirk. Recently two classes were formed in Corvallis in Prof. Loiscttcs system of memory culture, l'rof. (i. s. Fellows, of the High school at Washington, has just exposed the Pro fessor as a fraud, not the sysfcm but the Professor. The fraud lies in the fact that the "Prof." claims that he originated the system, whereas it transpires that the rules he lays down were in vogue in the days of Arisiottlc, and that the same system was published and taught thirty-five years ago by others in the United States. A Jingle The following is going the rounds of the press: O. Harrison, Hen Harrison, trot out a little jug, and shingle up the cabin Hen, and fix it warm and snug. It was so awfully dusty, Ben, at the Chicago snarl, that perhaps a jug won't be enough; you'd better bring a har'l. And don't forget the cabin, Uen, but keep it somewhere nigh; you wiil need it to crawl into the chilly by and by. The Drummer's Latest. He walks into the store, and during the conversatiou casually remarks, "Well, I think It is a put up job." You look curious and say, ''what," He has you then, and with a Col orado canyon smile remarks, "wall paper." He reached Albany a few dav a,;o and left thUasa relic. If it were not for the festive drummer life would be as dry as a street bummer. While on the subject, when a confiding friend remarks tnat it Is warm or hot the proper thing to sav is "rats." Ilt'iti.i.AK Cai'Tl rku. - Last night about II o'clock, a member of Mr. Williamson's family, residing opposite Mr. Thomas Montelth's residence on Ferry street, dis- covered a man trying to get into the house. They Immediately gave the alarm to their neighbors, Mr. Shane and Mr. Watt Monteith, who rushed from their houses as the man passed along Ferry street towards the city. Watt outran the man and or dered him t stop, near Mr. Young's resi dence. The fellow drew a knife and threatened to use it; but a revolver in the hands of Watt, and a pitchfork in the hands of Mr. Shane, who arrived on the scene soon after, made him yield, and lie was conducted down street. Once or twice he became belligerent with his knife, but Watt's revo'ver brought him to time, and lie was tinnally landed in the caliboose. The man is of the tramp appearance, about thirty-live years of age and is evidently a tough customer. Considerable credit is due Mr. Monteith for capturing the rascal, though nothing very serious can probably lie none lo turn. No one making a complaint the man, wlio refused to give Ids name, was discharged. He has been around Albany over a week on a continual spree. Some one states that at one time he was connected with one of the railroads. An Auvekti si.ni; Scheme. General Tyner,' representing the St, Paul Pioneer I'resS) is coining this way with an advertis ing schemc, and will no doubt attack Albany in time. The proposition he made in Ore gon City is probably the general one and we give it for our citizens to cogitate over: "If Oregon City's people would subscribe for 50 copies of his paper, at $ioa yean then the entire year Oregon City would have special "write ups" in its columns each week, by a correspondent specially designated by the board and paid by the paper. Each such subscriber would re ceive a copy of Rand A: McNally's altas as a gift. The paper, he said, hasa daily cir culation ot 33,000, and reaches the very and reaches the class that desire to emigrate, the native Americans in Dakota and Minnesota that are tired of blizzards. When Oregon had been entirely worked up a central ollicc for the Oregon department would be estab lished in Portland. Mistaken fo a" Birular. Messrs. Geo. Satlcrfield and N. A. Ward live in rooms of the same house on a ranch about 7 miles down the river. Last Friday night Mr. Satlcrfield, not feeling well, got up and went into the kitchen of Mr. Ward to get some medicine, and Ward's wife hearing the noise called her husband who got his gun and opened the kitchen door asked, "who is there ?" but receiving no rcplv fired a load of buckshot striking Mr, Satlcrfield In the tnign mulcting a dangerous wound. Dr. lirown was called, fixed up the bones, and dressed the wounds and hopes to be able to save the limb, but is by no means certain that it can be done. Eugene Reg ister. The Tramp N'i isaxck. They are hav ing a bad time with tramps in Pendleton ; but seem to be going at it in the right man ner. They are using balls and chains and street work as a punishment. Recently seven or eight were given some doses of this medicine. Two of the number re fused to yield when they were removed back to jail, and were fed on bread and water until a little of tneir independence was taken from thein, when they finally agreed to go to work. While the poor devils are the veriest nuslance imaginable, still a person cannot stifle a small feeling of sympathy for their condition. They arc against every man, and every man s hand is against them, a condition they alone are too blame for. We can keep them away from Albany if we will only go at them with "hammer and tongues" when they come here. They arc great advertis ing mediums and very soon they will pass without even leaving their cards. Di'LLEST on Record. It is not over stating fie case to say that right at presen' Prineville is laboring under the pressure of the hardest times it has ever s-jen. Ob serving persons can give the true solution of this state of business affairs, and all can sec at a glance what has caused it. But as few questions can now be discussed with out reflecting more or less upon the politic al questions of the present time, we refrain from saving anything further. .Ycwg, No Rats to This. Warm weather, whatever else it does cannot do away with one's appetite, in fact it increases it, particu larly for fruits, etc., and in fact we eat just about as much of everything except meats. An impoitant tiling, though is to get the best things to be obtained. Conn Brothers, of this city, have built up a splendid repu tation for carrying only first-class grocer ies and keeping on hand only the freshest fruits and produce generally. We are in re ceipt of a note from the Summit giving an account of a fight with a buck. Last Fri day, T. Ly tie, J. O. Davis and A. Hamar met a three-point buck in the lane oppo site the Wrenn school house. They threw rocks at the animal and Davis ran after it afoot, caught up with it and began stabbing it with his pocket knife.
