The current number of Puck's has one
oi the most sigificant cartoons which has
yet appeared. It is entitled "A doubled
barrcled campaign." Two large barrels lie
side by side with ends standing out in bold
relief. One barrel is labeled "Free Whisky"
andastideof It sits Harrison, while the
other Is labeled ''Boodle" and astride of
it is Morton. Harrison and Morton appear
in confidential embrace as though discuss
ing the influence of "free whisky" and
"boodle" on the coming election. Harri
son's barrel is labeled, "For the promo
tion of temperance and morality." The
cartoon shows up the leading forces of the
republican campaign in a very clear and
amusing manner.

Knocking the political wind out of Sher-
mcn at Cliicago had the effect of also re
storing him to reason. He made a speech
at Cincinnati the the other day H which,
speaking of the surplus, he said : "But you
all know how much good that immense
sum could do if it was let loose here. You
could use it, I am certain. The great
question is how to gel it. I believe that
til parties admit that it is poor policy to
have so much surplus in the treasury, and
that what we need is just enough funds on
hand to answer the purposes of the govern
ment, cccnomically conducted. The only
way to decrease this is to reduce the reven
ue. I believe vott have frequently heard
President Cleveland say this, and I think
you can find frequent references to it in
Mr. Sherman's speeches. Vc agree upon
this one point, but there is an honest dif
ference as to how it shall be done. The
all important question is what taxes shall
be cut and what remain. I want the rev
enue cut to the standard of the requirement
of the government, the same as it was when
1 entered Congress thirty-four years ago."
There now, that's good democratic doctrine,
and, if said by a democrat, subservient or
gans like the Ortgonian would be denoun
cing democrats for howling about the -surplus.

short sermon for Oregon fruit growers in
the news that comes to-day from Marys-
vills.Ual. Ihe item reads thus : "On
Saturday the Marysville Fruit Company
shipped a carload of fresh fruit to Minne
apolis via Portland, Or. This is believed
to be the beginning of a large and impor
tant trade in fruit shipments from this place
over the California A; Oregon line to points
In Northwestern states and territories. A
quantity of grapes.peaches and nectarines
was also shipped to Portland via express
last night.by the Sutter Fruit Company."

White, temporary chairman of the Nation
al Democratic Convention recently held at
St Louis, returned to this city last night
and was tendered an ovation. The occa
sion as also made a ratilicationof the Dem
ocratic ticket. There was a torchlight pro
cession over two miles long v ithSooomen

Spokank Falls, W.T., July 16. Post
office receipts for the year ending June 30
were ?I575, an increase of 60 per cent.
One thousand three hundred and twenty- '
seven registered letters were forwarded
last quarter. The office handles 3000 local
letters daily.

Paris, July 16. Bishop Freppel intro
duced a bill into the chamber of deputies
to-day abolishing dueling, and demanded
urgency for the measure. In the course of
his remarks introducing the bill the bish
op referred particularly to the recent en
counter between Fio'quet and General
Boulanger. The demand for urgency was
rejected by tile chamber.

Free Wool.
Washington, D.C. July 16. After a
brief argument by Breckenridge ill favo
of free wool, Wilkins ef Ohio moved to
strike wool from the free list.
On division the vote stood 95 to 122, and
the announcement was received with ap
plause on the democratic side. Sowden of
Pennsylvania and Wilkins and Koran of
Ohio were the only democrats voting in the
affirmative, while Anderson of Iowa voted
in the negative.
Buttertvorth of Ohio wished to effect an
arrangement by which an aye and nay vote
might be taken, but Mills declined lo com
ply. Tellers were then ordered, and Wilkin's
motion was defeated, 110 to 120.
Tlie Teacher.
San Francisco, July 16. Fvery train
that reached the city to-day brought fresh
accessions to the throng of teachers who
are assembled here from all parts of the
United States. The reception committee
and all the local entertainers h.TYe been
kept busy with their pleasant duty of greet
ing visitors and arranging for their com
fort. 1 delegations of the local committees
are on the road constantly between here
and Port Costa on the lookcut for incom
inetravelers. The visitor on arrival is es
corted direct to the reception rooms at the
Palace hotel. 1 here his name and local
address are registered and then he is es
corted to the rooms assigned him.
The Skiminnler.
Baker Citv. Or., July 16. On Saturday
a telegram was received by Coroner Beyd
to go to North Powder to hold an inquest
on a body fou id there. Yesterday the cor
oner returned from there. It is learned
iliac the body was only a skclclon, with no
clothing except shoes. There was a piece
of rope around the neck. It is generally
supposed to be the body of Wills Skiff, who
mysteriously disappeared Ihicc years ago..
