JOHNSON, President, The Louisiana 1'roirrriu.arvnn of tl.orr.l orcd Republicans of Louisiana.says : "An attempt was made a few nights ago by some person at prcnent unknown to assas. sinate on the streets Vm. Lee, local editor oi me Messenger, a colored Democratic paper published at Springfield, III., by Thomas T. Urown, Esq., and which is mak ing great inroads in the ranks of the color ed voters. On his way home Lee was shot at several times and was wounded in the thigh, He was a quiet young man and had no known enemies. He had recently join ed a democratic club, and threats previous ly made show unmistakably that the at- tempt on his life was made by some negro Republican hireling. That threats have been made by negro Republican hirelings against the lives of colored Democrats of the place admits of no doubt, and Editor Urown andother leaders have applied to the mayor and obtained permission to car.-v arms for defense. Those of us who know the deep hatred negro Republicans bore not long ago in this State against colored Democrats have no diffculty in realizing the state of affairs in Sm-inL'ficld. We re. member the time when it was not safe he re for a colored man to proclaim himself a Uemocrat. I Ins feeling is happilv dying out, and colored Democrats are now num erous enough, unaided, to defend themsel ves on the muscle. The only thin" tried against them now is social and business ostracism by the ignorant and vena' por. tion of the colored population, but thev survive that pretty well." The democrats of Indianapolis, Hani son's own hotne.had a magnificent ratifica tion on Saturday evening. There were 5000 men in line. Gov. Gray and ex-Sen ator McDonald made speeches. The fol lowing were some of the trauspariencies "Cleveland and Thurman, the People's Candidates.' "Blue Blood and Boodle- -Harrison and Morton." "The Germans arc Solid Against Hard son." , "Harrison and Free Whisky ; Morton and Boodle." "The Chinese Must Go Thurman. The Chinese Must Come Harrison." "Tobacco is a Necessity J. G. Blaine." 'What About Blankets f " "Republican Platform : Slate Pride.Free Whisky and High iaxes, "Indiana Will Give Cleve'and and Thur man 15,010 Majority." "Ilarriaon Voted Fourteen Times in travorof Chinese Immigration." Wm. Heniy Harrison, the grandpa of the republican candidate for president "was a believer in what the Virginians called a strict construction of financial questions, internal improvements, the veto pours and the protection of negro slavery." Why is Ben Harrison and his claims to the presidency like a beet ? Because the best part of him is underground. Sue iiup-irtt.t mlv ot anotuer coliuue. L K iir..ul;ij A lull li:i of lir.
