About t! o'clock this morning a fire was seen issuing from the burn on the alley in the rear of the Re fere IIou;c, belonging to Mr Charles Pfeifler. The jangle of the fire bell brought the firemen out In almost Seattle lime, ami three streams were soon too much for Mr. Fire. Although surrounded by wooden buildings and the barn was a mass of (lames at one time, nothing else was scorched. In the night time It would have ecn a fuvoi ablc place for a big lire, and the Democrat office trcmb'.es at the thought. Wc do not know haw it was started. A tramp,' hougln is said to have been seen coming from the. building just previous to the fire ; but. then tramps always play a part in fire", quite frequently ilesc.vctlly so. No insur ance. Damage about jjiico, A feir mo ments after the fire apparatri had been re turned to the engine houses ano.hcr alarm was given. A lire had caught In the roof of Woods marble shop, n half block awav. A few buckets of water extinguished li. Again, while the firemen were awaiting roll call alarm No. 3 was sounded. This time tiie fire was in Parker Bros, baker slvjp, just across the alley from the barn burned. A stream was put on it by No. 2's, quickly extinguishing the flames. Military Census. We admit the "corn," Mr. 7Ywri, about that foot racing business, and without any specks can sec that we put our foot In it. You are just about as virt uous in Corvallis as wc are in Albany in such matters. We arc jrlad it wasn't the Corvallis boys that passed the fast runner off for some one else, and if the Halsey man went to Corvallis for the sake of sweeping things, as he had already done with one of Corvallis' sprinters it "served him about right; still of course that way of doing things is naughty after all. Naugh ty Is a very tame sort of a word, you know. We've concluded'to be on good terms with Corvallis, and, Bob, suppose you jo'n with Pipes and the rest of us. A Wiiicelino Center. Albany is fast becoming the wh "cling center of Oregon and it is a fact worthy of note that the Co lumbia agent, J. P. Hail, has done more in the interest of bicycling than any other one individual rider, as he has sold during the last 16 months just 16 bicycles. Yes terday he sold to Percy Young a new 55 inch Columbia Light Roadster and also to George Henderson a 56-inch Expert Co lumbia Bicycle. A Plain Document. The Board of Tradc'j pamphlet is just out of the press. J, II. Burhhart did the work, a first-cla:s job. The descriptive articles arc good, speaking in plain language of our advan tages, without much e.;tra coloring. There is nothing in it intended to entrap the im migrant. Two thousand copies will be sent to San Francisco for distribution by the school teachers. Children's Day. The annual Child ren's Day will be observed at the Evangel ical Church next Sabbath, July 15th. A children meeting will be held in the even ing, a good progiam has been arranged and a cordial invitation is extended to all. New Milliner. This is one of the reasons why F L Kenton is selling so many groceries Tills morning about 8 o'clock one of the dray teams ran away, going nearly the length of First street, nearly running ovor a furui tuie dealer and several Chiuamen. For a great many years the custom has been for our CUy Council to pass a rcsoultion ordering our citizens to do some particular thing, like cleaning their alleys, within thirty days, and then when no attention is paid to the order, Instead of the Marshal's enforcing the order as it is his duty to do,anolher reso lution is passed ordering the business, whatever it is, done within a shorter period. But put a crowbar here ; the citizen who isn't frightened with thirty day is not with five, and so the thing goes on. One reso lution is all that should generally be passed on any subject, and our street commission er should sec that it is enforced, and it can be done as well with one resolution as with a million. If the property owner docs not do it on time it should be done at his ex pense. Residence Sold. Yesterday Mr. Jo - Tyler sold his residence, situated on the Cnnal, in the First Ward, to Mr. T. J.
