Daily Democrat. national; democratic itickkt. For ProBddnt-080ViRCLEViLSD,' Xew York or ViM PrMldent-ALLEN O. TIll'BU.lS, ol Ohio; Vor Pre'lentil Elector V. B. BII.YKI', of Linn county. W. II. E-'r'IN"iKlt, of Multnomah county. E. It, SKll'WOKTlI, of UuiatUia, county. WASHINGTON. From our regular correspondent. Washinutox, July 2nd, iSSS. Cleveland and Thurman are now regard ed by all democrats and not a few republi cans as sure winners. The republican con vention by its action in nominating Ben jamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton virtu ally removed all the elements of uncertain ty from the campaign- The general senti ment of the democrats in Congress is that the republicans could not have put up a weaker ticket if they had tried. Harrison has been defeated time after time in his own state and Morton is only an old"money bags." Both of them are about as far re moved from the people as it is possible for them to be. Henry George was in this city on Satur day last. He predicts that Cleveland will be re-elected, and that he will carry Cali fornia and Michigan. There were never so many democratic clubs in existence In this city as at present, and yet hardly a night passes that a new one is not organized. Washington will send thousands to Baltimore on the 4th to take part in the great convention and parade of clubs. Last week was a very important one po litically. First, the republicans nominated their ticket to be defeated ; next,Mr.CIeve land was officially notified of his re-nomination, also Judge Thurman ; the National democratic committee organized for the campaign by re-electing ex-Senator Wm. H. Barnuin chairman, and hc,after consul .ation with Mr. Cleveland and other influ ential members of the party has announced the executive committee ; quarters in New York city nave been secured for the perm anent headquarters of the National com mittec, and from this time on work of the hardest kind is to be the watchword. Representative Matson, who is the demo cratic candidate for governor of Indiana, was asked what chance Harrison had of carrying that state. He said : "I don't see how he is going to do it. Gray's major ity in 18S4 was 7,392 and Cleveland's 6531, Where Harrison is to get the votes to over, come this majority ,1 cannot imagine. He is distasteful to the Greenback and Labor element who hold the balance of power." Owing to the obstructive tactics of the republicans in the House and the slowness of the republican Senate it became necessary to pass a joint resolution extending the old appropriations for 30 days iuto trie new fiscal year. Mr. Mills says tliat his tariff bill will be passed by the Home before the first of Au gust. 1 1c says further that he has received hundreds of letters from republicans in all sections of the country commeuding the bill. I perfectly agree with Mr. Mills, with the exception of the date. I think it will be later before a final vote is reached on the bill, but there is little doubt now re maining of its final passage. Revenue re f Jim has made gigantic strides forward since the St. Louis convention. Next Saturday night Washington is to have a monster Cleveland and Thurman ratification meeting. The republican delegates to the Chicago Convention are still apologizing to their constituents for not having put Blaine up. Uencral Sheridan lias been carefullv re- . mvvi-u 10 rtuiiiimu, mass., wnere ne has a summer cotta ;e which has just been com pleted. He sailed on the C S. S. Swatara, tendered by the Secretary of the Navv While the tailors were carrying him on a stretcher up the gangway, a photographer attempted to tnke an instantaneous picture ot the scene but was prevented by Captain Mc(iowan, who threw his cap over the lens. The General looked very much emaciated and almost as pale as his pillow, Some quite lively discussions have taken place in the House of Representatives over the tariff bill in the past few days, and the revenue reformers came off best every time. Senators Allison, Sherman, Mandcrson, Colquitt and Berry have been appointed a committee to represent the Senate nt Hie Ohio Centennial exposition which opens the 4th Inst. At the last minute Mr.Cleve land found that it was impossible for him to attend, although he was particular. anxious to be there. Hundreds of the employes in the Gov ernment Departments here will take part in the Gettysburg re union. Those who took part in the b ittlc.on cither sidc.are en titled to leave with pay. Several excursion trains left here to-day for the battlifield. To hear n republican howl it is onlv necessary to tell him that the platform of the Chicago Convention favors free whisk v. The Senate spent the greater part of the past week over the River and Harbor bill. Senator Cockrell took occasion to make ' the statement.during the discussion of this bill.that we need no fortifications on our coastsat all nor any standing army, lie admits however that we do need a militia and navv. Speaking in favor of the power of the 'eneral "overnment through Congress to abrogate the Burlingame treaty so that the immigration of Chinese to this country might be entirely prohibited.Mr. Thurman said : "I say, therefore, Mr. President.that the ...... ...... lc lltArA linvtnor hppn no modincfl.' tion of this treaty by the treaty-making power, anu, so uii as c iniun,nvaui.i.r. having been made to modify it, there hav ing been nothing of that kind done, and manv.many years ha ing elapsed since the .-nc infir n nt thppvil rw rnivi n a vr V year greater and greatcr, and the danger to which we are exposea ay uu migiauon becoming every year more and more im minent, it is now the duty of Congress w ithout delay to take this matter in hand." 45th Congress, 3rd Sess. Part,Vol. S.page 1300. Let every voter compare that sentiment of Thurman's with Harrison's vote to natur alize Chinamen, and thcr. in the light of knowledge and in view of public interest determine who should be elected. The Democrat has been instrumental in increasing the democratic vote in North Carolina by one this fall, if providence or some other unavoidable circumstance shall not intervene. A gentleman who came from that state about two years ago and settled near this city, and who is a constant reader of this paper, sent a copy to a friend in the old North state who, all hfs life, has refused to vote at any election. After wards one of the family here wrote to the friend in North Carolina asking him how he liked the DE.MOCRAT.when he replied in his return letter that he was much pleased, and that through its influence he had been led to the conclusion to vote for Cleveland and Thurman this fall. That man's vote might save the state to Cleveland or some democratic candidate for Congress. Who knows ? I shall assume that the arguments al ready made at this session and at previous sessions have convinced the Senate that a limit ought to be placed upon the migration of Chinese to Ihe United States if,indeed, that migration ought not to be stopped al together. Allen G. Thurman, 45th Con gress. Compare that sentiment with the entire record of Harrison on the Chinese question and then say which of the two deserves the votes of labor people on this coast.
