An entirely unprejudiced observcr,speak- ing without regard to politics, who sat through the entire proceedings of both the great party conventions, says of them that the republican convention was abler in point of talent, and had more men of na tional reputation and more men of wealth and social position in its membership. The democratic convention was the more order ly ,the better directed, the more dignified ; that there was far less of drunkenness'seen in It.and that while bribing and the buying of votes were constantly practised on a large scale among the republican delegates, nothing of the kind was seen in those who met to represent the democratic party. The grape crop promises to be unusually large. Forfeiture Bill 1'aKnnl. Washington, July 6. The landgrant forfeiture bill passed the House to-doy by a vote of 177 ayes to S noes. The bill as passed is a substitute for tne Senate bill. The bill provides that all lands here to fore granted by Congress to any state or corporation to aid in the construction of railroads not constructed within the time specified in the act making the grant for the completion of such railroad shall be decmeJ forfeited to the United Statej. Wm.Lee, living near Fifth and James streets, returned to his home this evening, and finding F. F. Potter in company with his wife, thot at him, the bullet taking effect In the calf of Potter's left leg. He has eluded the police, and Potter, accompanied by Mrs, Lee, went to a surgeon's office, where the wound was dressed. Mrs. Lee 6avs her husband was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, and was not in his right mind. The shooting occured about 9 o'clock, and at midnight Lee was not still at large.
