A case.forcibly illustrating the prevalence of slavery among the Chineae.came up in court when a Chi naman named Sam Young tried by means of a habeas corpus to get possession of Yet You, whom he claimed as his wife, but who had escaped from him and become an inmate of the Chinese mission. Both he and his attorney testified that he had mar ried Yet You a year ago and taken her to San Diego. She.on the contrarv.denied the marriage, and swore that she had been pur chased by Young for immoral purposes,the price being $1033, and that she had since been his mistress. He had brought her back to the city to Rell her again for the same purpose and she had fled to escape such a fate. She wanted to remain at the mission and not go back to Young.
