To-night three military companies will arilvc in the city from Marion county on their way to Corvailis. They will be received by ''F" company! and wcwill have a little celebration of our own this evening. To-morrow morning at 7 o'clock the train will leave for Corval lis, and the Albany company will be on board, and nearly the whole membership will be in full uniform, because the whole Business is a rcjimcn'al affair and there is n line of $5 for absenting oneself from li. This makes some of our soluiers sqii'rm, but the drill is a grand one, end it is no doubt a good tiling to have a discipline thit will make p. company prompt:. If a hose team goes from Albany it w'll be an Im promptu affair. In Albany all the places of business, but the saloons and a few refreshment plpces, will be closed. This includes the Democrat office. Its ma chinery will take a rest for b.ie day, and force go where it listcth. Iliirrah! Advertising. The benefits of adver tising were plainly noticeable yesterday, says an Astoria paper, when at one grocery store which pays the printer liberally each month, a full corps of clerks were busy all day, while at another the proprietor sat mournfully in the door reading a paper, while his clerk paced the floor when the rain was falling and played ball when the sun shone. Still some people begrudye the paper a few dollars per month for blowing their business. Struck It. II. C. The Idea of using the American Hag ns a nose wiper Is ridiculous hcyoud expression. In Chicago a few days ngo a Wisconsin Republican saw a man wipe his nose with the siar spangled ban ner, nnd stepping up to him, knocked him down and wiped the dust with him. This is the basest purpose for which the Ameri can flag has even bec-n used. To Ai.uiva. Mr. T. Anderson, who has mixed drinks behind Max Baumgart's bar " for these many years, left this noon for Al blna, where he will open a saloon himself. Yesterday Mitchacl Peyser was filling the ftosltinn; but we are not informed whether ic will be the permanent bar tender. As we only take water straight It doesn't In terest us very much nny way. New embroidery just received at Head's W F His Nicw Story. II. Rider Haggard has just written a new book, In his usual awful style, which, by the way we do not appreciate at all, except as an illustration of how a man can lie when he sets himself down to business. Haggard Is a bigger lier than Ell Perkins, and doesn't write sense anyway. How his works have ever had such a big circulation beats us. The new sfory is entitled "Mr. Mecson's Will,'' and the heroine, Miss Augusta Smithcrs, is an authoress who has a great deal of trouble In England and skips to Australia to get out of it, but gets stiipwrecked on an island with old Mcesen the publisher, who has previously disinherited his nephew on Gussle's account. Then old Mecson gets ready to turn up his toes to the daisies, and remorse strikes him and he has a new will tattooed on Augusta's shoulders, as that is the only parchment obtainable. And die he does, while Augusta, after living 011 crabs and cuttle-fish for awhile, is rescued by a whaler and sent back to England, and meets old Mceson's nephew who marries her on sh'ht. Then they net the old man's wealth and raise the wages of authors, binders, printers and everybody else con nected with the book-making fraternity. Siiootino Accident. About 2 o'clock this afternoon, on the McConnell place near this city, Charlie Dougherty and Fred' Davis, a young man, who lives across the rlycr, who was working for him, were load ing a gun with some shells, when a very serieus accident happened. The former, after the gun was loaded went to place it j on a box, and at the same time young Davis passed in front of the gun. The hammer accidentally struck the edge of the box and the gun, a musket, was dis charged, the full load of shot entering one of the calves of Davis, causing a danger ous wound. Dougherty jumped on a horse and rode to this city, returning with Dr. Maston, who dressed the wound. Dr. Maston, who has just rcturned.statcs that Davis's leg will have to be amputated in the morning. It Was a Tkmperanck Lfsson. The Eugene Journal thus talks In reference to Gra.it Osborne, who died from an ove. dose of morphine in this city recently, 'n a manner thr-t must make our young men slop and think: "We have known Grant Osborne since he was a little boy. When a little boy he used to spend much of his time at our house, rml was one of the most industrious, trustworthy and blif'nfz little boys we ever knew. Gant's mi.'.fo.'lune rnd death were caused by gelling into bad comnany and acquiring a taste for st"ong d Ink before he arrived at maturity. But for these bad associates he would have been a blessing to society and an honor to his f.unily. He was natuially an excellent boy, smart, honest and Industrious. Aiif.m ! The Salem Stattsman gives an extended account of the firemen's excur sion to Albany, and closes with its usual donkey's brey at our city : "The people of Albany treated their visitors very hospita bly, and everybody returned with the best of feelings toward them. Their city con tains some fine business houses, but their streets indicate a terrible unwillingness to work rpad ta::es. They are abominable, and so are the sidewalks. The streets are narrow, and even then three-fourths of their width is grown to dog weed two feet high. There are but two that show any signs of travel, and those are in very poor condit'on. 1 he excursionists were all glad that they lived in a city of Salem's beauty. and were glad to get back to it." Right here allow us to remark that we are glad that you live there too. About the Mines. The following from the Orcsonian, in connection with what Ihe Democrat said yesterday about the Sanliam mines, is to the point, and be hooves our citizens to watch for develop ments : Mr. McLcran, Jr.. accompanied by a competent epert, has just returned from the Santiam district, after giving the mines of the Galena Mining and Milling Company, of which Mr. McLcran is presi dent thorough examination. 1 tie expert, it is understood, is astonished at the excel lence of the silver mines he found on the Santiam. A full report will be published this week, which should be read, as the ob ject will be to show that Oregon in mineral, as well as agricultural, resources is to-duv the richest slate in the Union.
