The Repnblicana cannot be charged with breaking faith with the people. "The Republican party pledges itself to correct the inepualities of the tariff and to reduce the surplus," was the declaration of the plat form of 1884. The platform of 1888 redeems this pled gc. It propose to effectually correct the "inepualities" of the tariff by raising the duties on "such articles as are produced by ourpcople" indiscriminately to a prohibit ory point, so as to -'check imports of such articles." It proposes to "reduce the surplus" by spending it on national free schools, on sub sidies for our navy, on coast fortifications, on the purchase of modern ordnance, on in creased pensions, on River and Harbor improvement appropriations and on any other schemes by which it can be taken out of the Treasury. Will the people be satisfied with this manner of fulfilling the pledges ,of x8S ? The present tariff is high enough to tax them unnecessarily, and therefore unjustly, on all articles of necessity they consume and on all the products of industry they use. If the duties should be raised to the point of prohibition of imports they would be taxed yet more highly by the increased price of those articles cractcd by the home manufacturers and producers combined in monster Trust monopolies. The Republican platform of extreme Protection is a plan to promote the new- monopoly of Trusts. Under its operation every business free from competition would soon be merged in a "Trust" which would cripple labor by limiting production and hold contiol of prices and supply. Such is not the tariff revision and the surplus reduction the people want They prefer Mr, Cleveland's plan, which would decrease the tariff on articles of necessity and materials of industry, reduce taxation and leave the surplus money In the pockets of the people where it belongs. The attention of verterans and others is respectfully called to the fa'ct that the two members of the house who objected to the appropriation for the Gettysburg celebra tion were Browne Republican, of Indiana, and Burrows, Republican, of Michigan. TELEGRAPPHIC NEWS A Great Strike Pittsblro, June 29. The ironworkers strike is now on, and by to-morrow noun the mills will he idle. At a conference of the wage committees of the Amalgamated Association and the iron manufacturers this afternoon, the workers' representatives stated that the lodges had voted upon tho question of reduction, and had decided al most unanimously .to reject it. The man ufacturers then stated, in language just as positive, that they would not pay the pres ent wages. A scale will be presented to them for final consideration to-morrow. Brokers in the coffee market were filled with consternation this morning by the springing of the sharp est corner ever worked in the coffee ex change. Bulletins had the effect to com plete the corner in spot coffeee, and when operators having June coffee to deliver at tempted to buy it.tliey found it was all held Dy a. oruner Ai lo. and (Jressman Bros., who represent the hull clique. In the first hour of business the price advanced 5 cents a pound, opening with a sale at 12 cents.and advancing to 13 cents on the first call on sales of 1250 bags. After the call it rose one cent at a time until noon, when 18 cents was bid and no coffee found for sale. Bull brokers intimate that outstand ing contracts will be settled at 20 cents a pound. Fast Rowing. New Loxdox, Conn., June 29. The Eleventh annual eight-oared race between the University crews of Yale and Harvard was rowed this afternoon over the Thames river course, of four miles straight away, and was won by Yale by twenty-four lengths. Time.ib minutes and 10 seconds; Harvard's time, 21 minutes and 14 seconds. The series of races between these two col lege crews now stand six, to five in favor of Yale. Yale's time to-day -is the fastest ever made on the river, surpassing that made last year by Harvard, of 20 minutes and 20 seconds, in thi race with Columbia. Utch Teachers. Salt Lake, June 29. The Utah teach ers excursion to the natianal education con vention at San Francisco promises to be a splendid turnout, over 100 leading Gentile and Mormon educators having signified their intendent Stewart is now making the necessary hotel arrangements. The excur sion will leave here July 10, via the Oregon Short Line to Portland! where a few days will be spent; thence by steamer to San Francisco. The fare is $50 50 for the round trip.
