Another pioneer ami re spected citizen, Levi Fanning departed this life at his heme near Albany on the morn ing of June 5U1, 188S. He had been in poor health for sonic time and vet his death came with quite a shock of surprise. Mr. Panning was born In Va., Feb. 8th, tSoy his age at the lime of his death being 79, years, 3 months and 27 days. When about :(? eleven years of age he removed with his .' parents to Illinois, soon after to Tenn. !;. where they remained for a 6hort time and returned to III., where he remained until t he removed to Oregon in 1S5.2, settling in i Linn county, where he resided till his de- misc. After a residence of nearly thirty- mx ycurs 111c vermes 01 ins ncignuors is tnatnc was a quiet, honest, upright, chris tian man, and what greater eulogy could be bestowed. He leaves a companion, three children, and children's children to mourn us loss, but with the assurance that he Is resting in peace. His remains were laid to rest in the Albany cemetery, June 7th from the United Presbyterian Church in Alany, followed by a large number of rela tives, friends and acquaintance. The fun eral sermon was conducied by Rev. II. 1. Webb, of the M. K. Church, and Dr. S. CJ. Irvine, of the V. P. Church. All unite In theirsympathy to the relatives. W. The Picnic. Several from Albany at- tended the picnic at B levins' bridge Thurs day, returning with reports of a very suc . icessful occasion. Mr. John Simpson, 6tate 'jlccturer, and Mr. Hayes, Master of the State Grange, were present and dclivcied stirring addresses. Hon. R. A. Irvine rep : 'resented the Linn countv council in some pointed remarks. This fs one of the pleas . antest places in the county for a picnic oc casion, and no people knew better how to enjoy the good things of life than the Grangers and their friends. j Swiiit Is. Huford 'sort of a petafoggcr jover aime isay, was given the nomination in the 2nd district for Prosecuting Attor ney on the Republican ticket because no one else wanted to run against J. W. Ham ilton as sure defeat almost stared them In the face. Hamilton's election was consider ed a fore gone conclusion and no work was done for him. Now it transpircsthat Hu ford has been swept in and elected by a small majority. Exciting Chask. This afternoon about I 2 o'clock a boy named Cunningham began throwing stones nt a Chinaman, who was passing along the street near the Revere House. The Chinaman became infuriated and started in hot pursuit, and chased the lioy two blocks liefore he stopped. There is hardly a doubt that he would have done the boy great bodily harm had hesnccced cd in catching him. The boy was the aggressor. V, . The entertainment given was well presented In nearly all of Its parts, In some with remark ably good effect. Misses Belle and Amelia senders were heard In the overture and several limes during the evening, in piano duets. 1 hey play with a finished touch, Miss Sarah Slernburg delivered tho salu tatory with good emphasis and in a nice manner. An Instrumental duct by Mi KSCS Stcrnburg and Skelly was followed by vocal duet by Miss DubrulIIe and Tattle Dodge, beautifully ung. The little Misses Brenner rendered a plans duct, w hen the drama, "Sylvia's Jubilee" was presented, with its introduction, prologue and tab leaux nicely given. In this Miss Amelia .Senders, Totlie Dodge and Miss Dubruille, particularly sustained their parts, the lead- ngones, in a creditable .manner. A tab. caux, "J he 1' hiding of Moses," was very pretty. Who wouldn't be Moses. Probably the most entertaining of the program was the "Musicians," presented bv Totlie Dodge as leader and about thirty other little girls in full and eaudv' uniform. Totlie Is a perfect host for one so vounir. and in this as well as In all ef her parts, captivated the audience. "Miss Willis' Will," a comedy in one act, was the life of the entertainmcn. Miss Cunningham was simply enormous as the Robert's girl, Miss Lulu Webber displayed fine talent as Lady well, we forget the nme, and Sadie Cohen and Miss Feniiell kept up their parts with spirit. A diploma of gradua tion and a gold medal were presented Miss Lura M. Campbell In an Imposing manner by Bishop Gross, when Miss Campbell de livered the valedictory, in poetry, Miss Campbell possessing quite a talent in this way, in a happy manner. His Grace then presented gold medals to Miss Mary Skellv, for Christian doctrine, Mrs. Mady donor ; Lulu Webber, for composition, Judge R S Strahan donor ; Miss Amelia Senders, for book-keeping, Mr Felix O'Toole donor ; Miss Nellie Rich, for polite conduct, Mr J A Gross donor.
