to remove the tempations presented in this

higher spheres of usefulness, and to have
Princeton known as a safe place to which
fathers and mothers may Bend their sons."

Mayor O'Brien of Baston has designated
Mr. E. J. Walker, a prominent colored law
yer of that city, for the position of Assessor.
Dut, instead of giving the Democratic
Mayor credit for this liberal act, the Re
publican journals find fault with it They
are not anxious for the advancement of the
man and brother of dark complexion unless
he is willing to be the slave of the Repub
lican machine.

Ritzville, W. T, June 6. Ritzville
burned at 4 : p. m. Ten business houses,
the hotel and a law office were destroved.
The Times building was burned.but part of
the plant was saved. The fire started in
the American Exchange, and a southwest
wind carried the flames to adjoining build
ings. Loss about $45,000 ; insurance about
$15,000.
Four Young Indies Drowned.
Sax Francisco, June 5. The Examiner
special from Winer,N'cbraska,says :Whiie
a party of eight persons, returning from a
wedding, were crossing the Elkhorn at this
point to-day ,on a Hatboat.it dipped, and all
were swept into the water. Fouryoung la
dies were drowned, but the others were
rescued. The bodies were not recovered.
Jail Break at Jacksonville.
J.vcKsoxviLLE,Or., June 6. A jail break
was made from the Jackson county jail
here last night. Three tramps, held for
larceny in an Oregon & California box-car
at Ashland, pried the doors off their cells
with a large steel bar, which it is supposed
they got from the office of the jail.and made
their escape.The jail breakers were captur
ed at Gold Hill this afternoon.
SEATTLF.June 6. Deputy Sheriff Bayne
arrived to-day from Coopcrville in charge
of an Italian miner, Michael Lucci, who
stabbed Dan McPhcrson while in a quarrel
Sunday night. Lucci drew a big pocket
knife and slashed his victim in the back.in
flicting a deep gash along the backbone
which it is feared will prove fatal. Lucci
escaped to the woods pursued bv a crowd.
If they had caught him he would have been
lynched. Afterward Lucci returned and
surrendered himself to the justice and was
held to appear before the grand jury, Mc
pherson's condition is so precarious he can
not be removed to this city for treatment.
