About Daily evening Albany democrat. (Albany, Or.) 1888-1888 | View Entire Issue (June 1, 1888)
!"!' ; Daily Democrat. Cap. Humphrey will heave a censalatoiy sigh next Tucsdav when he contemplates the majority under which the republican ceuritv ticket has been buried. Vannv Smith is a small man, yet he lias made oiie of the best sheriffs I.lnn county has ever had. By the way, the people are to be heartily congratulated for their next Sheriff will be a mailman. The greatest good to the greatest number is a cardinal democratic principle, hence he party favors a reduction of high taxation. It is a human trait as broad and uni crsal as civilization itself, that men like to far(e) well.so a large majority of the voters of the countv will on next Monday, actuated by this universal motive, place the name of Far(e)well on their ticket for County Treasurer. Organized labor has as many rights as organized capital, and to protect laboring men every voter should cast his vote for John M. Gearin for Cengress. Vote next Monday for Elmer Montague, the se'f-made man, for County Clerk. He is a man sf sterling worth and a -whole- tOuicd, genial fellow. Judge John Burnett's record can be found in the Oregon Reports when he occupied a position on the supreme bench, lie is a line jurist and should be again elected. Democrats of Brownsville, send to your brethren in all parts of the county the re nert next llendav evenins that vou hav fought a brave fight and have done your wnoieuuty. Baz. Cooper will make one of the bes Commissioners the county has ever had, Baz. shows by attending te- his own busi ness well, that he is just the man for Commissioner. As hades is said to know no fury like that of a woman scorned, so the world hath no greater liar than the campaign slanderer defeated. WHOM SIlAhli VK KU'.IT? It is a matter of greater moment w he shall bs elected to congress than one would at first imagine. It Is far more a matter of business interest to the people of the state than one of politics. Oregon is a young state, taking the necessary steps to assume her proper place in the family oi states. What the great majority of the people ot the states desires is a proper recognition of her claims in congress us one of the co equal states. It would much facilitate the interests of Oregon by electing a member of congress who is in harmony with the majority of that body, for then our mem ber could secure positions on important committees in which all the interests of the state, In the wav of beneficial legisla tion and liberal appropriations, are settled and determined. Then it would be much better that our delegation should be di vided politically, for then wc would have a representation that could speak for all interests. The two senators from Oregon are republicans, and in case of Mr. Her mann's election the whole delegation will belong to that party, and hence they w ill never be able to do much for the stale a long as the democrats have control of the lower house, which ball admit will be for years yet. Mr. Gearin is a man of super ior ability, a man who had his birth in this state, fully and absolutely identified with her material interests and prosperity in every particular, in harmony with the ma jority of the house, well-equipped with a full knowledge of all the state's needs, and in all respects the very man who can do Oregon the most good in congress. Then let democrats and republicans alike vote (or the interest of the state by voting for Mr. Gearin. Solicitor Jenks made a profound remark the other day when he declared that "very many people are Democrats who are not aware of it." As the clearing away of the clouds shews the mariner the stars and enables him to determine where he is, so the present discussion of economic question dissipates the fog of partisanship and dis closes the path of.safety. Those large tax payers all oyer the coun ty ,who care more for good county govern ment than politics, will scan their tickets next Monday, and if they do not find the name of Judge Whitney printed on them, tey will quietly take their little penciisand WUe his name thereon. In apprehension of the certain election fjudgc Whitney, it is now believed that the Herald will revise and modify its cam paign falsehood that that gentleman said that he would belt the presidential ticket this fall in case he should not be elected. How can Mr. Geo. Davis.the republican candidate for County Clerk, expect any sup port from the friends of Fred Muller, who owed much of his defeat four years ago, when running for County Trcasurer.to the active opposition of Mr. Davis. My democratic friend, when you go to the polls next Monday, scan your ticket clo'cly and see that the name of E.E.Davis is on it for the ollice of County Recorder, lie is every way competent and a whole souled gentleman. He Is the only candi date Harrisburg has had for a long time. That precinct hasalwaysstood up manfully for the ticket, so let all stand in now and return the compliment. L. M. Curl, the democratic candidate for School Superintendent, is a young mansf exemplary character, excellent qualifica tion for the office, an Oregon raised bov, and deserves the vote of every democrat in the county. There is none of your smart "Aleck" in him. Deinocrats.look ot your ticket and see that his name is on it. It would be a grave mistake to elect a man for Sheriff who has no qualifications for the ollice, ho can not odd up a small column of figures. Therefore vote for John Smallman.who has a good education and Is otherwise competent. Look at that ticket when you come to vote and see that his name Is on it. R. C. Miller, J. II. R. Morclock and Jeff Meyers arc the three democratis candi dates for the legislature. lie sure u you go to vote that the name of each is on vourucKet. A vote for Richardson, Ir vine or Kirk is a vote for Dolph. E.J. O'Conner is skillful survevor. Kone better in the county, lie is entitled to and should receive every democratic vote in the county. See that your ticket has his name. Gee. Belt candidate for district attorney has had the experience of one term in that office and it would not be good poticr to make change now and put in an inexpert, enced man. Sec that George's name Is on your ticket. J! .... The index linger of the signVpoints to the fact that there is a flower in the garden for the democrats of Linn countT next Monday. It seems as though the Republicans will not be satisfied unless Mr. Blaine publishes his withdrawal in the form of an affidavit. But why this lack of confidence in the word of this most prominent candidate? G. V. Phillips of Scio manages his own business successfully and -will therefore make a safe, reliable CeuntyCommissioner. See that his name is on your ticket. The most egregiously mistaken man in the county is the one who thinks tariff re duction will never win. The great American fact is that the Linn county democratic ticket is growing strong er day by day. County Canvass, Lebanon, Friday, June 1st, at one o' clock p. in.
