The fallacy that a high tariff makes high
waSes has not a leg to stand upon. In this

1857 than they are under the existing war
tariff. Wages are higher in England under
free trade than they were under protection.
They are higher there than in Germany or

has compiled from a republican campaign

ges paid in England and Germany in a
large numlicr of industries, which is worth
the thoughtful study of every workwoman

our tariff tax is a tax on consumption, a tax
on food, clothing and a thousand and one
tools and implements used in agricultural
and industrial pursuits. This peor man

as much taxes. It is simply Ihe power of
the money of the rich against the muscle
f the poor.

A Town Without Hotels.
Keexe, X. H., May 21. Many r-ids far
liquor have been made recently, and the
hotel keepers met and agreed to close if.
they could not supply their guests. The
last raids were made Saturday. To-day
four hotels, the Cheshire.American Eagle
and the two city hotels discharged their
help and closed their doors. The city is
practically without places te entertain its
guests. Dixey's "Adonis" company has
arrived, but is w ithout accommodations.
River and Harbor Bill.
Washington, May 21. The committee
on commerce has reported the river and;
harbor bill to the senate. A number of
changes have beer, made in Pacific ceast
items since the house passed the bill. Be
sides others, the committee recommend the
following increases: The appropriation
for improvement of the Willamette river
is raised from $14,000 to $29,.co,$i4,ocoof '
which may be used for revetment work
above Corvallis ; mouth of the Coquille,
raised from $22,000 to $25,000. The total
increase, as reported to the Senate.is about
$1,500,000. The appropriation for Oak
land, Cal., is made $350,000 ; Wilmington,
Cal., $62,500 ; canal at the Cascades, Or.,
$300,000 ; mouth of the Columbia, Or.,
$500,000 ; lower Willamette and Colum
bia, in front of and below Portland, Or.,

Missing.
Sam Francisco, May 21. V.L.Snelling
registered at the Russ house In this citv
several weeks ago, from Lakeview, Oregon,
where he is interested in the milling busi
ness. His purpose in visiting this city was
topurchasesawmilling machinery, and it is
known that he had severri thousand dollars
in his poseession. Last Tuesday he loft the
hotel, and has not been seen since. His
valise and effects are slill at the hotel.
The matter was reported to the police to
day, and an effort will be made to find the
missing man.

ance in the neighborhood.
Mrs. W. H. H. Grant is spending the
summer with her sister, Miss Mary Ward.
There was spelling school at the Ward
school house last Saturday evening, we
suppose it was very interesting.
Ezra Jones has returned from a two
