The fallacy that a high tariff makes high waSes has not a leg to stand upon. In this country waKcs were relatively higher tin dertlie "Ircc trade tariffs" of 186 and 1857 than they are under the existing war tariff. Wages are higher in England under free trade than they were under protection. They are higher there than in Germany or Franee or Italy.whlch are heavily "protect ed." The Detroit Advance, a laber organ has compiled from a republican campaign document a table showing the average wa ges paid in England and Germany in a large numlicr of industries, which is worth the thoughtful study of every workwoman Here It I. ; Kftgland. The Advance verv correctly attributes the high wages paid in tne L nited States to the abundance of cheap iana, anu declares that when land becomes scarce and dear here, as it is in older and more densely populated countries, waaes will tend to the. That man crossed the plains in 1863 with a team of oxen. The writer has known him l, the time of his arrival here. He has al ways benasobcr, industrieus man,biit,1ike multitudes of ethers,he has never acquired any property ,and to-day has not to exceed Soo In the way of a little home, and yet. unaer our taritt laws that man paid as much tax into the treasury of the United States last year as the man for whom he works who is worth $100,000. How is it ? Well, our tariff tax is a tax on consumption, a tax on food, clothing and a thousand and one tools and implements used in agricultural and industrial pursuits. This peor man used as much woelen and cotton clothing I' in his family last year as his employer. And though It .1S not as fine and dress'-,' 3.- ilJ worn hv LI. -...i .... er, yet tne lax vt.-ts as high atid immlly higher. Is it ri,ht to tax the hod carrier or oilier day laborer as much as the millionaird f And yet under thisprolective theory the amount of taxes a man has to pay is measured by the amount of dutiable articles hefensumcs, and as a poor man needs as much cloth ing and food as the millionaire dee 1 he pays as much taxes. It is simply Ihe power of the money of the rich against the muscle f the poor. Here are some of the figures given by M. Mills.inhis recent speech on the Tariff hill, to show the sums which American manufacturers receive to divide among Mii'ii- workingmrn, on the plea that Amer ican w ages arc higher than European wa ges : Total Labor COil.
