Yesterday Mrs. G'headh; tried to get a while man to do the leveling for her as the loads were dumped; but could find no one. So she grasped a shovel by the tail end and all day long kept ahead of the teams, though they declared she hadn't the back-bone, and sixty five loads were hauled. This morning a young man from the Kast came along, and as he was an the work he readily secured a job. Hetold a Democrat man that "they" told him if he expected to get work here he might ai well retrace his steps ; but he said he was never in a place yet where there wasn t work ol some kind to be done, and he is satisfied that if he goes after it in earnest he will get all he can do, particu larly with a fisrt-class recommendation from one of Albany's most energetic pion eer women. Tom Rekii. This most original and out spoken genius, who resides in Benton county about ten miles west of here, was in the city yesterday, anil made the echoes rll from street to street. Uncle Tom has given nearly half a doen large farms to his sons and lias a thousand or two thous sand acres left. Not much style to him, lie cuts deep into those who have the disposi tion to dress even decently well. Only a day or two after the writer came to Oregon he lashed him furiously for having a white shirt and lrince Albert on. Itut Uncle Tom is one of the men it takes to make up the world, and is n character m his way with a big heart, when you get the debris away lrom 11. Not that Way. The Lebanon vmi has changed from a prohibition paper to a local newspaper and this is the way the editor talks : "If you can't go for prohi. bition just stop my paper ; all right Mr. S we can afford to drep a name once a week, especially w hen they do not pay in advance. The Express is increasing its cir culation at the rate of ten or fifteen sub scribers a week and we propose to standby our guns and waste no ammunition. Pri vately, we challenge any man to examine our record on the question of prohibition, both in theory and practice, but wc are not running a pronibition paper ; if you want a first-class paper on this line we advise you to send for the Pacific Express and you will get the worth of your money. A Curious Cari. A man name Louis Loret publishes the following rather curi ous card in the Eugene City (iuurti : "In 1870 on one Sunday night Mr I 1) Driver in the Methodist church in the city of Portland, Or.,assisted in raisingjmoney for the purpose of bringing Chinamen into this Stale and he frequently stated in public anil in private that one Chinese soul was worth more than one hundred white souls." Hoard Election. The new Hoard of Fire Delegates met last evening at No. j's Hall and elected C W Watts, Prcsi dent. M E Brink, Secretary and T J Over man, Treasurer. We learn that the Willamette Packing company of Albany, have erected a large building, put in ma chinery and have now a large force en gaged in making cans for the coming sea son of fruit. They have already fifteen tons of tin and more than a dozen hands are employed in making the cans and otherwise getting ready for the summer and full fruit. They are using a fourtcen horsc power engine and will engage about lift y hands during the season, and put u,) lot less than 100,000 cans, or 5000 cases. low why cannot Lebanon form a joint stock company for the same purpose; the fruit that annually relsontl.e ground and otherwise goes to waste in and around Leb anon, would create an immense business give employment to idlers, and bring a large revenue to our town. Lebanon has natural advantages over Albany in this business. Express. By ail means get one; but if you cannot, bring your fruit here, save it anyway. A I'kizi: Fight. The following from the Salem Statesman is probably a canard and we'll wager the fight mentioned never takes place in Albany. This is not a prize fighting city. "A. II. The Shasta express this morning consisted of ten cars, including three Pullman sleepers, two first.class,one emigrant and one smoking car, all crowd' ed with people going through. A few got ff to look around, and one asked in a tone of great surprise : "Why, it this the capi tal of Oregon .'" at the same time looking at the dry flat around where the train stops. This gentleman was probably looking at the country, as he passed, and perhaps visiting towns which a view commended to him, but lie venton through Salem. The railroad company can be blamed for this situation no lunger, though, and so the .rouble will have to go without blaming anybody, for, of course, it would not do to blame the people of Salem that the de pot is not located, hereafter, in the city. It was that of a man who heals aliiinalt lolling in a drunken stupor in an arm chair, while the boys of the city peaked from around the corners at the debasing sight. Down on a traffic that dethrones men of their reason and places them in back alleys with the dogs of the city. Talk of moral saloon keepers; many of them I sell to a corpse almost for the sake of lis ten cent piece. The Y'b. A very nice social entertain ment was given at the W. C T. U. hall last evening, the attendance being largely young people of the growing and bloom ing age. A short program consisting of devotional exercises, some songs by the union, tne reading et an essay by Misi miller recently read at the meeting ot th State W. V. T. U., and two or three song Dy a young ladies quartet. Crekinole an other games were played in an enthus iastic mannncr. Crawfish. The average small boy is happiest now when he hat a scrawny, ugly looking crawfish at the end of a stick, sc cured after a still hunt along the banks of the ditches.
