apostle of protection, '-Pig Iron Kelley.
These are straws showing thedriftof popu
lar sentiment on this great question.
Hear in mind that in their national plat
form in 1884 the republican party solemn
ly pledged the people that they would re
duce the surplus by correcting the inequal
ities of the tariff, and now they resist with
might and main every effort made in that
direction. "Consistency, etc."

Tacoma, W. T.,May i6.-The wife of A
M Hoska, Chief of the Fire Department,
and Mrs Anne Spencer of Spencerville.Ont,
arc twin sisters. Their mother died at
Canton ,N. Y., thirty -two years ago in giv.
ing them birth.
1 he babies were separated soon alter, one
being taken to Pesthiga, Ill.,and the ether
to Spencervilie, Ont.,to different families.
At these respective places the girls grew
to womanhood, neither knowing anything
of the whereabouts or fate of the other.
Some months ago Mrs. Bass, a newcom
er, met Mrs Hoska, and, mistaking her for
Mrs Spencer, of whom she had for years
been a close friend and neighbor.at the lat
ter's home in Ontario,addrcssed her,in sur
prise at seeing her here.
The inquiries that followed this mistake
of identity led Mrs Hoska to write to Mrs
Spencer and so proved her surmise that
the latter was her sister was correct.
The Palouse Fire.
Walla Walla, May iS.- Fire broke
out in Palouse City.WasMngton Territory,
at 5 o'clock Thursday evening, in Daniel
Preffcr's hotel, located in the center of town
and burned both ways. The fire extin
guishing facilities were nothing and the
citizens turned their attention to saving
goods from the dsomed buildings. Seven
blocks were burned with an estimated loss
of $250,000 and $75,o0 insurance.
The Floodv.
Alma, Ark., May iS. The hardest rains
for many years have been falling in Ar
kansas the last two days, and the streams
hare all overflowed. Immense cotton
fields and corn bottoms are flooded, and the
country has suffered general inundation.
So quick was the rise of water that many
people were driven from their houses and
forced to swim for their lives. Many wo
men and children are standing on the tops
of houses,crying for he.p, with water ten
feet deep around them, and still rising.
There are fears that raayy lives have been
lost.
Yaquiua Ashore.
San Francisco, MayiS. This afternoon
news was received of an accident to the
steamer Yaquina, at Little river, Mendo
cino county. The following dispatch was
received from Capt. Le'and.- "The Ya
quina struck bottom coming out of Whites
boro this morning. We beached her at
Little river.Water is up to the fire room,
and gaining. Send a steamer to take cargo
and passengers. I am awaiting instructions."
Virginia City, May t6. James Mc
Carthy, the 16-year-old boy convicted of
murder in the second degree yesterday for
killing Dominick Solari, was sentenced to
twenty-one years in the State Prison. He
confessed to his ccunsel this morning that
he had planned to kill Solari, his victim.and
also his partner.who was with Solari at 'he
time.and mount their home and cscape.but
Hint his pistol failed to go off when he
pointed it at his victim's partner and he
ran awav.
A curious result cfihe discussion of the
wool tariff is noted in Eastern Oregon. It
is said that cattle men, wishing to annihilate
the sheep of the country and have the
range for their cattle herds, will vote for
the democratic policy of free wool. The
question for Hie general voter is whether
this policy of destroying the sheep of the
state would be a good tiling forthe state at
large. Oregon fait.
