A petitiou is being cir culated in this city and generally signed, addressed to the management of the O & CRI Ce.,asking that the Lebanon branch of that road be extended to Sodaville, thereby offering to Valley people means of reaching that increasingly popular summer resort without having to resort to stages and animal conveyances. The movement is one it is to be hoped will prove success ful, and we are satisfied that at least during the summer months it would more than double the business of this branch read. Hodavillc has advantages for becoming one of the best places of resort in the State, and It only needs this road to place it in front. Tiik 4TI1. What shall we do on the 4th of July, that is the question. The next tiling to a heme celebration, and this seems l be the off year, would bean excursion to Yaquina Day. We need more ocean ozone, and hence this would be the proper direc tion in which to travel. Yesterday a Dkm ocrat man was talking with Mr. Stewart, of the Oregon I'acilic, and he stated that the Company would be glad to make such an excursion" if it is what we want, lie thinks perhaps the excursion could he made for something like $3, at which we predict it would take a long train to carry us. The matter is worth agitating. Look OBt. Atlempts at burglary are being made In different parts of the city, Mendav niiJU an attempt was made le enter the residence of Mr. Hearst, but the effort failed. There Is a mean looking class of strangers around, and some of them will steal if they can obtain the opportunity, which our citizens should see they de not obtain. Y. W. C. T. V. ISntkrtainmf-nt. The young ladles ( this In ion will give one of their popular social entertainments at the W C. T. U. hall on next Friday evening. The several brands of Red Crown Hour have no superior on the coast.bcing very popular all over the North west, and it takes a large amount of rust ling to look after the demands of the com pany's large trade. In Ohio. Last evening Mr. L. E. Blam received a letter from Mr. D. P. Porter, of Shedd, dated at Rockland, Ohio, in which he gave an interesting description of his trip and experiences. He said he must have passed th rough the best part of Southern California and Texas in the nighttime. He had attended a bit; cen tennial celebration in Ohio, where he saw Hayes, Hoadlcv and other celebrities, and was having a tine time. Dusty. The dust lias begun to fly through the city, and a general sprinkle would not hurt things. People who buy their groceries of Conn Bros., though, hard ly notice the presence of this unwelcome stuff. Fresh, pure goods at bottom prices make us forcet the ills of life. If you ever feel despondent call on Conn Ilros. and the load will be lilted. Colt R kit. The Eugene Guard says the clerk's office in this county has been kept by Mr, Galhraith in as good condition as any In the state. Belter than in nineteen out of twenty counties. Mr. (J. C Chambers, of East Albany precinct, and several of his neighbors, made up a pool of 7,000 bushels of No. I wheat stored in the Fanners' Wareheusc, at this city, and in the afternoon opened bids on the same. Mr. (Jcorge Simpson's bid was 0514 cents and he received the lot. The highest 'bid by Portland men was 63 cents, but Mr. Simpson tells a Pkmoi kat man that the I'ni ilic Coast market justifies what lie paid in large sales. Farmers who can get this price w ill probably do well to sell, accepting the present indications as a guide. A Sni'i'iiii I'iihasant. Mr. Thomas Monteith has shown us a magnificent specimen of the species of bird known as tiie Cliinses pheasant, which a friend of his from the country picked up near a barbed wire fence, the place where they are generally found, and presented him a few daysago. Mr Peacock did the stut)iug, and asa result Mr M. has as line a mantleorna ment as can lie found anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Speaking of Chin ese pheasants Mr Monteith informs us that a few days ugo lie saw fourteen following in the footsteps of an old hen in Mr Adam's yard near the Red Crown Mills, the hen having found the in and cast her motherly wings over the poor foundlings. A Pictlhk The father and mother of young Wright, the boy that was murdered near Yaquina last week, are divorced. At the funeral, or the intervening time be tween the murder and the burial not one of the children would speak to the mothen although they spent several hours in pray er for the forgiveness of the assassin, for getting entirely the dear mother who had watched over them In the cardie in the days of their helplessness, and refusing to oiler a word of consolation to the woman who gave them birth in her hour of bereav ment. Corvallis 'J'imrx. Picnic Season. Several Eugene men are getting up a picnic for men only You'll please excuse us. All that has ever hallowed the name picnic is the apron string attachment. Without ladies a gen uine picnic is a desert, and we w ould rather lie the man in the moon than one of such a picnic party. In this citv arrangements are being made for an S. S. picnic to which both sexes will he invited. A grove on the line of the Oregon Pacific where that road crosses the limpid waters of the Santiam, is talked of. A Shark. Prof Condon received a box from Yaquina by express last week marked "deliver Immediately," "this side up," etc- I'pon opening it he was surprised to find a real shark carefully enclosed therein. It was not quite solari'e as one of the "man- eaters" but it was a whole shark anyway. the t'rolesser has it In a large glass bottle in alcohol now, and has added it to his thousands of other specimens.
