But the tariff taxes levied on these iron and stee' products range all the way from jo to 109 per cent, or from double to five times the wacs-cost of the American product. The present council was elected alter a hard light on straight party lines,and hence Stole's indignation. Reduction in Suar. San Francisco, May 14 The Californ ia Refinery Company cut quotations one eighth of a cent a pound on white sugars, and one-fourth of a cent on yellows. The American Company to-day ma Je a further reduction of one-eighth of a cent all round, which was met by the California Company. At present the refineries quote white su gars at 6 cents a pound and yellow propor tionately less. The market is weak, and further reductions are considered certain, Raging Jlissisfippl. St. Louis, May 14. The river is steadi ly rising here, and the inhabitants on the American bottoms ara moving ail of their portable property back to the high land. Reports from the north are alarming, and if the levee on Madison lake breaks loose the damage will be in the millions. The regular exodus has taken place from the Sny bottom. The entire town of Alexan dria, Missouri, is inund.ited with five feet of water and the damage is very heavy .The people are being taken as fast as possible to the high lands, a couple of miles back of town. The Sny levee is now being patroll ed for miles by sentinels, whose dutv it is to summon assistance when any weak spot is observed.
