It is aid that comparisons are odious. Thev are to those againat whom they tell, but they are often entertaining and instruc tive to others. Voters should judge of the fitness of candidates for office by their past public record where they have held public office. Public office is a public trust, and where an officer has failed to perform his trust his conduct should btf condcmned. As showing the manner in which the affairs of Linn have been managed for the last two ' years we will make a comparison between Linn and Marion counties, but we premise our remarks with the statement that the two counties are about equal in point of population, there being a few hundred more people in Marion than in Linn. From the first Monday in July, iSS6,up to and in cluding the April term,iSS8,of the County Court of Marion county, that Court paid their Sheriff $10,794,17 for services perform ed for the county. For the same period of time the County Court of Linn paid the Sheriff $-i,9ii.o3. Noothcraccounting for this remarkable discrepancy can be made except that Judge Whitney has constantly kept a continual watch upon the financial interests of the county. The amount paid the Sheriff in Marion makes things looks suspicious at least, both for the Court and Sheriff. Let the voters of Linn be glad that tkeir interests have been so safely guarded by Judge Vhitney, and let the vot ers of Marion open their eyes and investi gate into the way their public moneys are expended. But here is another point : For the same period of time Marion county paid her County Clerk for county work $6,069.55 and Linn paid her County Clerk $3,6yS.8j Here is more food for reflection. Why should the work performed by the Sheriff of Marion county, for a given time.be worth three times the amount performed by the Sheriff of Linn for the same, and why should the services of the County Clerk of Marion performed for the county be worth nearly twice that performed by the Clerk of Linn ? This wide difference in the man agement of the financial affairs of the two counties is as fully apparent in the amount of taxes collected in each county for county purposes. It would be proper to say here that the total taxable property in Linn is substantially the same as that in Marion, The amount collected in Marion for county purposes alone in 18S6 was $55,175.81. The amount collected in Linn for the same year was $37,681.91. The amount collected in Marion county for the year 1S87 was $70,- 371.80, and in Linn for the same year was 9.907.31. As further showing the pains taking character of our County Court we give below in mills and tenths of mills the average tax levy in the counties named for the last two years : Chitsop,i3..j ; Benton, S.4 ; Douglas,! 1.3 ; Washington,8.4 i Yam. hill,8.7 ; Columbi.1,5.3 ;Coos,9 9; Lane,?.? Polk, 7 ; Multnomah, 6.5 j Clackamas, lii Marion, lo.and Linn 4.9. We feel confi. dent that the tax payers of Linn will find abundant reasons for re-electing Judge Whitney, The Sunday Mrremy, republican, says : 'We believe that the delegation in Con gress from every state should be divided between the two political parties. The overstates realizing this, frequently elcit democrats from strong republican districts, notably Pennsylvania and Massachusetts They arc aware that 4 delegation composed of republicans and democrats can accom plish more for their states than a solid del. tgation of either party could do. We are therefore of the opinion that it would be advisable to elect John M. (i-ariii at this lime.as we have and will return two repub lican Senators from Orcjon." Now that we are to have several repub lican speakers in the near future.we ask all who hear them to observe carefully to see w hether the speakers answer the fol. owing questions which are so drawn as to cover the actual issue before the country : Do you favor a reduction of the surplus in the treasury of the United States ? If so, how- would you reduce it, and how mucn reuui. lion should be made f Would you reduce it by reducing the duties on imports ? Or, would you reduce it by repealing the tax on whisky and tobacco ? Would you reduce it by buving U. S. bonds at a high premium r If reduction is to be made on imports, then on what line or lines of imported goods ? Does the speaker favor the carrying out of that part of the republican platform of 1SS4 whirh nledcr.d the oartv to a reduction of the surplus by a revision of the tariff ? Runt Political Debate. Rev. I.D, Driver, of East Portland, and Prof.G.M.Mil- ler, will discuss the political issues of the dav. including notonlv the prohibition o' the liquor traffic, but the tariff, the labor question, modern trusts, and protection of the ballot, at the court house iu Portlano next Webncsday evening, May 16 at b o clock. Governor Gray, of Indiana, Gen. Black the present Commissioner of Pensions.Gen A.E. Stevenson, Postmaster General dick insou and Gen. Vilas are all spoken of as available candidates for the vice pi esidency with Cleveland. Lauflin M. Curl, known to last year's stu dents as one of their number, has received the Democratic nomination for school superintendent in Linn county. As Linn Is a Democratic countv, and Mr. Curl has excellent prospects for election, his student freinds here congratulate him. eugene Journal (Kcp.)
